A job listing for a position at EA Motive suggests that the next Battlefield game could be going open-world. According to the listing, the studio is searching for a new Senior Environment Artist to work on the next Battlefield game, with experience working on open-world games a "plus."
The news of what would likely be a massively controversial decision comes just days after EA CEO Andrew Wilson hyped up the next Battlefield game. During a financial earnings report in August, the CEO called the upcoming shooter one of the most ambitious projects in the studio's history, whilst also saying it was one of EA's top priorities. Given the dire state that Battlefield 2042 launched in, EA and DICE are likely gearing up to make some monumental changes to the franchise, with an open-world approach now seemingly being a real possibility for the next Battlefield game.
Battlefield 2042 Roadmap Reveals New Content Coming Later This Year
DICE reveals a new Battlefield 2042 roadmap of content and events, which will kick off once the current Season 7 comes to an end.
In a now-deleted job listing for EA Motive, which was spotted by Tech4Gamers forum user cindiestarlight, the studio appears to be searching for a Senior Environment Artist with open-world experience for the next Battlefield game. Although EA has made no mention of the next Battlefield being open-world in any way, fans of the series are speculating that this job listing indicates a big change for the first-person shooter. Plus, with reports that Black Ops 6 will also feature an open-world campaign, it's no surprise that its biggest competitor would want to go toe-to-toe with any game-changing features.
Battlefield Job Listing Hints at Open-World Elements
Although the job listing has since been removed, possibly due to the position being filled, the role was specifically searching for an individual to work on the next Battlefield game as a Senior Environment Artist. Under the qualifications section of the listing, it noted that the ideal candidate having experience with open-world games would be a "plus." While that doesn't necessarily mean the next Battlefield game will be entirely open-world, it does suggest that the element will play a part in some way.
Fans of the live-service shooter are already against the idea, with Reddit user Diastrous_Lie stating the game would be "boring" if it were open-world. Given that Battlefield 2042 received largely negative reviews when it launched in 2021, EA and DICE have a lot of making up to do for fans of the franchise, and a controversial change like this might not necessarily be the best way to go about it.
Back in February, an industry insider reported that the next Battlefield would come bundled with a free-to-play Battle Royale mode. This means that any open-world elements included in the next Battlefield game might not necessarily be related to its campaign or standard multiplayer maps, but are actually related to its potential competitor to Call of Duty: Warzone.
