  • A new standalone Avengers game is rumored to be in development.
  • It's said that the new game is not connected to the Crystal Dynamics Avengers game.

A new Avengers game is rumored to be in development, one that reportedly isn’t connected to the Crystal Dynamics Marvel’s Avengers game. Crystal Dynamics brought Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to consoles with a team-based, live-service title in 2020, but the results ultimately failed to win over the superhero gaming fanbase. Marvel’s Avengers was criticized right out of the gate for its monetary practices and repetitive combat, and struggled to build a player base as a result. Despite efforts to continue supporting the game through post-launch content, Crystal Dynamics ultimately discontinued Marvel’s Avengers in September 2023.

A good hero never stays down for long though, and some of the characters featured in Marvel’s Avengers have appeared in other games since. Marvel’s Midnight Suns featured a few cast members from the ill-fated Avengers game as playable characters, as does the recently launched Marvel Rivals. Captain America is set to return to action alongside the Azzuri version of Black Panther in Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, and both Iron Man and the modern-day T’Challa Black Panther are getting single-player titles from EA.

Would an MCU Avengers Team Comp Work in Marvel Rivals?

Marvel Rivals' lack of role queue inspires what some may call unorthodox compositions, but can an MCU Avengers team win a match in the hero-shooter?

Now a new rumor suggests that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are about to get another chance at a designated video game, as reported by Comic Basics. This comes from gaming industry insider Daniel Richtman, who recently claimed that Marvel is looking to capitalize on the success of Marvel Rivals with a new standalone Avengers title to his followers on Patreon. The only major detail shared at this time is that this supposed game won’t be connected to Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics’ Marvel’s Avengers.

Rumored New Avengers Game Won’t Be Connected to Marvel’s Avengers

Last summer, a similar rumor claimed that Marvel was looking to develop a game set in the MCU, though nothing else about it has been revealed so far. This “MCU Adjacent” title and the new Avengers game Daniel Richtman speaks of could be one and the same, but it is important to note that neither rumor has been officially verified at this time.

While Marvel’s Avengers didn’t live up to the hopes of either players or the companies that developed it, the characters themselves are still ripe for a new video game adaptation. The success of recent titles like Marvel Rivals and Insomniac’s Spider-Man series is proof that there is still plenty of room in the Marvel universe for new interactive adventures, but only time will tell if the Avengers are assembling for a new game - and if they can avoid the pitfalls that doomed their last attempt.
