Summary

  • The Witcher's Sirens of the Deep disappointed with low ratings among critics and audiences.
  • Despite Doug Cockle's return as Geralt, the animation and writing received heavy criticism from viewers.
  • The future of The Witcher franchise remains uncertain as fans anticipate Season 5 and possible spinoffs.

Netflix's The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep adapts the short story written by Andrzej Sapkowski , A Little Sacrifice, in which viewers can witness some similarities to Disney's The Little Mermaid. However, even though one of its biggest draws for The Witcher fans was hearing Doug Cockle's gravelly and iconic Geralt voice back in action again, the animated movie seems to have sunk to the ocean floor with some of its audience.

Even though Netflix's live-action The Witcher series has been the streaming giant's most popular IP adaptation so far, Andrzej Sapkowski's fantasy world has received plenty of love over the years. The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf was released in August 2021 and became a welcome addition to its ever-expanding universe. Critics and fans had high praise for the animation, saying that it was a solid adaptation with a strong, action-packed story that was mostly faithful to the source material. A month later, Netflix announced its second anime feature film based on The Witcher IP, subtitled Sirens of the Deep, and as Netflix quietly added the movie to its platform, its approval rating could leave feature Witcher animations up in the air.

On Rotten Tomatoes, a website that aggregates reviews for movies and TV shows and provides a Tomatometer score based on reviews from critics and a Popcornmeter score based on reviews from audiences, Netflix's The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep hasn't gone down too well with many of its viewers. So far, critics have given the animated spin-off only a score of 59%, while its audience has gone even lower at only 40%. Currently, on Netflix's top 10 movies, the animation has unfortunately not had a great deal of success on there either. Although Sirens of the Deep did slip in at number 8 last week due to the movie just being released, it has seemingly now faded away.

One critic stated that Sirens of the Deep felt like an "unremarkable animation" and "another spoonful of content thrown into Netflix’s trough", while another reviewer said that even though the iconic voice of Geralt is back in the fold, "its story falls prey to the show's issues." It seems as though most viewers had the same reaction. One fan called Netflix out by stating the platformer "Ruined a great story from the Original Witcher book", and another fan couldn't agree more by highlighting its "Shockingly bad animation and writing." However, Doug Cockle's "wonderful voice performance" was the movie's saving grace for many.

So far, Netflix hasn't announced when season 4 of The Witcher will make its grand entrance with Liam Hemsworth holding the reins, but it has been confirmed to be released sometime this year. The Witcher season 5 has already been greenlit, although it will be the series' final season, which makes its return even more intriguing for fans regarding whether the show can stand on its own feet without the beloved Henry Cavill as its iconic Geralt. Only time will tell.
