Author Neil Gaiman addressed the Coraline 2 rumors that fans have been pleading for since its release back in 2009. Gaiman's original novel, published back in 2002, centered around the character of Coraline as she and her family move into a spooky new house - where she discovers a hidden door that seemingly transports her into an alternate, dark-tainted parallel universe.

Coraline went on to receive an Oscar and Golden Globe nomination for Best Animated Feature. However, the film didn’t just gain critical acclaim, it also brought home $124 million at the box office despite only having a $60 million budget. Due to Coraline's massive success in both the Academy and theatrical arena, it naturally made fans assume there would eventually be a sequel at some point. Unfortunately, it looks as though the likelihood of a sequel ever happening has been shut down by Gaiman. A fan took to Twitter and directly asked Gaiman if the rumor of a possible Coraline 2 movie coming out later this year is true. Gaiman immediately addressed the rumors and bluntly shut them down.

All he tweeted back was a simple, straight-forward, “No." Although his response is incredibly disappointing, this isn’t the first time that the author has rejected the idea of a potential sequel. In early 2021, one fan asked Gaiman for a sequel, which he ultimately dismissed due to the fact that he felt whatever story he could conjure up would just not be better or out-do the original.

Sometimes, when a film has so much success it can lead to a fear of ever touching it again, due to somehow disrupting its magic. In all actuality, this logic is quite fair considering many films and series over the years have most definitely overstayed their welcome and dragged the legacy that they had built to a stalemate. Although Coraline may not be getting a sequel any time soon, fans can look out for Gaimain's upcoming adaptation of The Sandman, which is set to drop on Netflix later this year.

Coraline is available on Amazon Prime Video.
