Naughty Dog recently showed off an Easter egg in The Last of Us Part 1 that has managed to go unnoticed since release, allowing players to alter the main menu's lighting with a specific button prompt. The reveal came as a surprise to many fans online and serves as one of the seemingly new features added to The Last of Us Part 1, which served as a full-on remake of the original game.
The Last of Us is a fairly expansive game despite its linear storytelling and presentation, offering a variety of extra things for players to see and unlock, like unique character interactions, alternate costumes, and even visual filters. When The Last of Us Part 1 was released in 2022, it expanded the original version significantly and added several new elements, including some never-before-seen Easter eggs.
The official Naughty Dog Twitter account recently demonstrated one such Easter egg with a video showing off the ability to change the lighting on the game's home screen with a series of button presses. By pressing the D-pad and Triangle button on PS5, or the "E" key in the PC version of The Last of Us Part 1 in a specific sequence, the lighting coming through the window on the main menu will change color to a brighter white hue.
Undiscovered The Last of Us Part 1 Easter Egg Blows Up Online
Typically, the lighting changes automatically when players select the Left Behind DLC in The Last of Us Part 1, but by pressing buttons in the sequence shown, the lighting can be changed manually instead. Fans were largely shocked by the reveal in the replies to the tweet, stating that in all their time playing, they had never discovered the feature, seemingly due to the very specific sequence required to achieve it.
The reveal came as part of the developer's routine celebration of "The Last of Us Day" on September 26, which commemorates the in-universe date in which the cordyceps fungal outbreak kicked off the apocalypse. Despite the occasion, however, many fans expressed frustration toward Naughty Dog for the lack of meaningful new content for the series , such as the now-defunct The Last of Us multiplayer game which the developer previously promised.
That being said, the company did give its other major series some attention with a remastered collection of the Uncharted series for the PlayStation 5 and is seemingly at work on a mysterious new IP, so it remains to be seen what will come from it in the future. Speculation surrounding a potential third entry in the Last of Us series has recently abounded along with the upcoming release of the second season of its critically acclaimed HBO television adaptation.
