Summary

  • Boruto anime has too many fillers due to catching up with manga.
  • A Naruto reboot should come before rebooting Boruto for clarity.
  • Boruto: Two Blue Vortex features a thrilling Boruto vs. Jura fight.

The following article contains spoilers for Naruto and Boruto.

The Boruto: Naruto Next Generations anime is great, but many fans dislike the excessive amount of filler content. While the story is interesting and action-packed, the production team of Boruto was forced to resort to creating original content in order to allow the manga to progress, as has happened with many other series.

Boruto will soon return with the continuation of the anime, but some fans would prefer a reboot to a sequel. But would it actually make any sense to reboot this series, or are fans exaggerating?

Boruto Anime Adaptation Has Too Many Fillers

As happens with most anime series that run for years straight, the Boruto: Naruto Next Generations (Boruto: NNG) anime adaptation had to come up with a lot of filler content when it caught up with the manga. And since the Boruto: NNG manga has had a monthly schedule for quite some time, the anime would frequently catch up with the manga, faster than Naruto did.

In order to try to circumvent this problem, the anime production team often adapted other Naruto media instead of creating too many filler arcs. Most novels, for example, have been turned into Boruto episodes. Nonetheless, the anime progressed faster than the manga, eventually running out of material and resorting to original episodes and arcs.

Honestly, not all filler content is bad. In fact, Boruto delivered some interesting and touching filler arcs, such as the Time Slip Arc, in which Boruto Uzumaki goes back in time and meets Naruto Uzumaki and the others when they were still kids — he goes back to the time of the Naruto story. This arc was part of the 20th anniversary celebrations for the franchise and made many fans happy.

However, it's common for the manga to contradict filler content later on, which causes headaches for the production team. For example, in the anime, Sarada Uchiha becomes a chunin. That hasn't happened in the manga, and Sarada being still a genin is important in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex (TBV). It's easy to fix this one in a potential Boruto TBV adaptation, but it can still be confusing for anime-only fans. For this reason, many fans think Boruto should be rebooted.

The Problems of Rebooting Boruto

Story-wise, the best approach would probably be to reboot Boruto: NGG before continuing the story. However, the anime is still new, and there are still many things to be adapted. Thus, business-wise, making a reboot would probably not be a good decision, as fans of the anime are waiting for the series to continue, and not for a reboot. Furthermore, the TV series differs greatly from the Naruto: Boruto movie, to the point that it could be considered a reboot of the movie. Thus, fans might think that "another" reboot is pointless right now.

Therefore, it would be better to finish adapting NGG and start covering TBV before considering a reboot. For now, fans can consider the anime to be in a different timeline than the manga, or simply ignore the fillers.

A Naruto Reboot Should Come First

Boruto is not the only series with lots of fillers; the Naruto anime adaptation is full of them, too. Therefore, if the series were to be remade, it would be best to reboot Naruto without fillers first, and then proceed to reboot Boruto. While adapting Two Blue Vortex without fillers might confuse anime-only fans because many things won't match what happened in previous anime, leaving things as they are is the best option.

What's Happening in Boruto Two Blue Vortex Now?

Boruto TBV is now in the midst of a thrilling fight between Boruto Uzumaki and Jura, the leader of the Shinju clones. Fans expect Boruto to show a new, overpowered technique soon, but for now, he seems to be losing the battle. Following the Human God Trees arc, the story will probably shift its attention to Code, Kawaki and the Otsutsuki clan once again.

Boruto: Two Blue Vortex is available on MANGA Plus, in English and many other languages.
