The role of Hokage has been taken on by seven shinobi since its institution, with each individual reign coming to an end in a different way.

The first four Mizukage shaped much of the Hidden Mist’s history through their secretive policies and diplomatic embargoes, even leading to the nation being dubbed as the “Bloody Mist.” While the atrocities of their times are well-known, the fate of each Mizukage remains a blur for most. However, piecing together details from Naruto reveals the fate of each Mizukage, and how their reigns eventually concluded.

1 The First Mizukage — Byakuren

Died Of Natural Causes

Byakuren, The 1st Mizukage, Not Looking Amused During the first 5-Kage Summit in Naruto

First Appearance

Naruto Shippuden, Episode 369, "Warring States Period"

Debut Date

July 24, 2014

After the conclusion of the Warring States Period, Byakuren established the Hidden Mist Village in the Land of Water, relentlessly working towards cementing his newfound country as one of the Five Great Nations. Despite being a man of wisdom, Byakuren was a skeptic, as he even questioned Hashirama’s intentions for being too humble during the very first Five Kage Summit.

This skepticism was reflected in his leadership, as his reign was marked by limited interaction with other nations. While it was never exactly stated how Byakuren died, it was implied that he passed away due to his old age, possibly sometime before the initiation of the First Great Ninja War.

2 The Second Mizukage — Gengetsu Hozuki

Killed By The Second Tsuchikage

The 2nd Mizukage Reanimated During Naruto's 4th Great Ninja War

First Appearance

Naruto Shippuden, Episode 267, "The Brilliant Military Advisor of the Hidden Leaf"

Debut Date

June 21, 2012

Despite his eccentric disposition, Gengetsu Hozuki’s unrivaled strength led him to the revered status of being the Mist’s Second Mizukage. With an inescapable genjutsu, a Kekkei Genkai, and the ability to liquidate his body at will, Gengetsu Hozuki possessed an unmatched arsenal, even enticing Kabuto to go through the trouble of acquiring his DNA for his Edo Tensei.

For reasons unexplained, Gengetsu bore a stern hostility towards the Second Tsuchikage, Muu. This ended up becoming the reason behind their demise, with the Gengetsu and Muu mutually killing each other in a cataclysmic battle. Gengetsu was later revived in the Fourth Great Ninja War through Kabuto’s Edo Tensei, though he was defeated and sealed away by the Shinobi Alliance.

3 The Third Mizukage

Died Of Unknown Causes

First Appearance

Naruto Shippuden, Episode 382, "A Shinobi's Dream"

Debut Date

October 16, 2014

The Naruto series rarely expands on the history of the other ninja villages, and this very lack of exposition is why the fates of a few Kage remain unknown. The Third Mizukage is among the list of such Kage, though his case is rather absurd, as the series never even revealed his name.

Naruto: The Fates Of Every Kazekage

Often viewed as cursed, the role of Kazekage has been held by many illustrious shinobi. Here's what happened in the end to each one of them in Naruto.

However, it was implied that he was an extremely capable shinobi, considering he was the bodyguard of the First Mizukage during the Five Kage Summit. Since the Third Mizukage was quite young, and given the Hidden Mist’s political turmoil, it’s safe to assume that he was either assassinated or killed in battle. However, these are merely speculations, as Naruto never exactly revealed the actual fate of the Third Mizukage.

4 The Fourth Mizukage — Yagura Karatachi

Killed By The Hefty Toll Of Obito's Genjutsu

Yagura Karatachi’s reign over the Hidden Mist is one laden with tragedy and despair. As one of the few Jinchuriki with Tailed Beast control and a vision to improve his nation, Yagura got off to a promising start. However, the Fourth Mizukage’s leadership began to wane right around the time he was visited by a mysterious man claiming to be “Madara Uchiha.”

Obito Uchiha had put Yagura under a mind-controlling genjutsu, essentially hijacking the Mist’s political landscape. Thus began a new era of the Bloody Mist, as he reinstated the ruthless academy ritual of classmates killing each other to graduate. During the two-year time skip, the people of the Mist started suspecting foul play, which led to Ao detecting Obito’s genjutsu via his Byakugan. While Ao was able to dispel the genjutsu, its toll on Yagura’s body was far too great, leading to his untimely demise and sorrowful fate.

5 The Fifth Mizukage — Mei Terumi

As the predecessor to Yagura Karatachi, Mei Terumi had to bear the brunt of his brutal and regressive policies. Complex, morally gray, and shaped by the darkness of the shinobi world, these characters bring a unique twist to the archetype of the anti-hero.

Mei Terumi was more than an exceptional ninja, as her resolve to bring reforms to the Mist was more than successful. Years after the conclusion of the Fourth Great Ninja War, Mei stepped down as the Fifth Mizukage and passed on the mantle to her retainer. While she is still working towards improving the Hidden Mist Village, Mei mostly stays in the backdrop, letting the newer generation shine.

6 The Sixth Mizukage — Chojuro

The Current Mizukage Of The Hidden Mist

Chojuro From the Hidden Mist

Naruto Shippuden, Episode 199, "Enter the Five Kage!"

Debut Date

February 17, 2011

Initially serving as the Fifth Hokage’s retainer, Chojuro succeeded Mei Terumi as the Sixth Mizukage more than a decade after the conclusion of the Fourth Great Ninja War. As a Kenjutsu expert and a skilled shinobi, Chojuro has proven his worth on several occasions. Continuing on the efforts of his predecessor, Chojuro is committed to bringing the Hidden Mist on par with its counterparts.

Despite recent tremulous events shaking up Boruto: Naruto Next Generation’s narrative, Chojuro’s reign over the Hidden Mist Village remains steadfast. Chojuro is currently serving the Hidden Mist as the Sixth Mizukage, and his newfound policies are reflected in his nation’s prosperity.
