Summary

  • Hagoromo Otsutsuki is the epitome of power in Naruto, mastering ocular techniques, Sage Mode, and the Creation of All Things Technique.
  • From his mastery over the Sharingan and Rinnegan to possessing all five nature transformations, Hagoromo's power is unmatched in the series.
  • The Treasured Tools of the Sage of Six Paths add to Hagoromo's arsenal, each with unique abilities that aid in capturing souls.

As the progenitor of ninjutsu itself, Hagoromo Otsutsuki holds a revered position within Naruto’s narrative as the strongest shinobi of all time after Kaguya. His moniker of the Sage of Six Paths further alludes to his god-like power, with no other character attaining such a status in the series. While the Naruto series mentions Hagoromo’s feats, his actual powers are rarely witnessed in the anime, forcing many to question the true extent of his power.

From the two strongest ocular techniques to mastery over every single nature transformation, Hagoromo’s arsenal is teeming with overpowered abilities. However, these powers are merely a glimpse of his true potential, as he has a myriad of other mind-bending abilities in his repertoire.

Naruto: Orochimaru's Villainous Origins, Explained

Orochimaru is infamous for his ruthlessness, yet the roots of his villainy are often glazed over. Here's a look at what set him off an a path of evil.

Mastery Over Ocular Techniques

Boruto Hagoromo Otsutsuki

As the son of Kaguya, Hagoromo inherited the Otsutsuki’s powers in the form of his Sharingan and Rinnegan. Instead of inheriting his mother’s Rinne-Sharingan, the dojutsu manifested itself in the form of its base constituents, with the Sharingan awakening first, and the Rinnegan afterward.

The manga never exactly stated that Hagoromo was the first person to awaken the Sharingan, though an anime-only flashback arc revealed him to have manifested the dojutsu long before awakening the Rinnegan. As the direct descendant of Kaguya, it’s not too far-fetched for him to bear the Sharingan, making it a legitimate part of his arsenal.

Sharingan

Hagoromo's Sharingan

First Appearance

Naruto, Episode 5, "You Failed! Kakashi's Final Decision"

Debut Date

October 31, 2002

Users

Kakashi, Hagoromo, Indra, Uchiha Clan

The Sharingan was the first of Hagoromo’s powers to awaken, though he was only able to manifest the ability after finding the body of his lover, Haori. His Mangekyo Sharingan manifested similarly, as the grief of striking down his brother Homura caused enough pain to activate the next variant of the dojutsu.

Elder brother, your eyes!

Since Hagoromo’s Sharingan was only witnessed in an anime-only episode, little is known about his Mangekyo abilities. The only ability shown in the series was his Susanoo, which is arguably the strongest in all of Naruto considering it was able to mirror the size of the original Ten-Tails. Hagoromo is also immune to the crippling drawbacks of the Mangekyo Sharingan, meaning he can use it continuously without losing his vision.

Rinnegan

Hagaromo's Rinnegan

First Appearance

Naruto, Episode 135, "The Promise That Could Not Be Kept"

Debut Date

May 18, 2005

Users

Nagato, Madara, Obito, Otsutsuki Clan

Hagoromo awakened the Rinnegan along with the Mangekyo after he killed his brother. He is the only known master of the Rinnegan, and his use of the dojutsu is far superior to any of the other users. There aren’t many instances of Hagoromo using his Rinnegan powers, though it can be speculated that he had access to the Six Paths Powers and every other Rinnegan power used by other users.

Hagoromo was able to seal Kaguya using Chibaku Tensei, a technique derived from the Rinnegan. Moreover, he called back the souls of the deceased Kage from the Pure Land using the Outer Path of the Rinnegan. Unlike other users, Hagoromo does not face any of the repercussions associated with using the Outer Path.

Six Paths Sage Mode

Yin Yang Release

First Appearance

Naruto Shippuden, Episode 421 "The Sage of Six Paths"

Debut Date

July 30, 2015

Users

Hagoromo, Hamura, Asura, Naruto

Hagoromo mastered Sage Mode under the tutelage of Gamamura on Mount Myoboku. Owing to his massive chakra reserves and Otsutsuki lineage, he quickly mastered the art of Senjutsu. Learning Senjutsu gave way to his very own Six Paths Sage Mode, a special form of this art that grants users powers that ordinary ninja can’t even begin to fathom.

The major aspects of Six Paths Sage Mode include heightened chakra manipulation and comprehension, the knowledge of all nature transformations, and access to Yin-Yang Release. The Truth-Seeking Ball is another technique that stems from this sage mode. Hagoromo can grant Six Paths Sage Mode to others, with Asura and Naruto being the two known recipients.

Truth-Seeking Balls

Hagoromo's Truth-Seeking Balls

First Appearance

Naruto Shippuden, Episode 378 "The Ten-Tails' Jinchuriki"

Debut Date

September 18, 2014

Users

Hagoromo, Hamura, Asura, Obito, Madara, Naruto

The Truth-Seeking Balls are a result of the Six Paths Sage Mode, and Hagoromo and Hamura were the first ever characters to wield this power. Hagoromo can summon at least ten Truth-Seeking Balls at a time, with two of the orbs shaped in the form of the sun and moon. Truth-Seeking Balls are immune to all ninjutsu, and they can only be countered by Senjutsu.

Truth-Seeking Balls are composed of all five nature transformations, coupled with Yin and Yang Release, meaning wielders of Six Paths Sage Mode can naturally use this ability. Hagoromo was able to mold the Truth-Seeking Balls into the Sword of Nunoboko, a relic that he used to shape the world and give objects form. The sword takes the form of a double helix, similar to the structure of DNA, as it represents the essence of life.

All Nature Transformations

Hagoromo Using Lightning Release

Boasting every single nature transformation isn’t exactly a feat limited to Hagoromo, since a handful of characters are known to use all five chakra natures. However, his feat is special as he was the first person ever to master all five forms of chakra release in the ninja world.

While he hasn’t been witnessed using all five nature transformations in the series, there are a few instances where he used Lightning Release and Wind Release. However, the true extent of his power lies in his usage of Yin and Yang Release, two nature transformations that lie outside the traditional five releases.

Yin-Yang Release

Sage of Six Paths With Naruto and Sasuke

Mastering Six Paths Sage Mode grants the user Yin-Yang Release, a form of nature transformation that combines Yang and Yin Release to create a living form out of nothing. Since Yang is physical energy and Yin is spiritual power, combining the two transformations results in the power to conceive whatever the mind imagines.

While ninja can have access to Yin and Yang Release separately, combining the two together is next to impossible for any regular shinobi. Hagoromo’s Creation Of All Things Technique stems from his mastery over Yin-Yang Release.

The Creation of All Things Technique

Creation of All Things Technique

Stemming from the power of Yin-Yang Release and Six Paths Sage Mode, the Creation of All Things Technique is god-like power that allows the user to alter reality itself. By creating life and form out of nothingness, this power is akin to that of a god. Hagoromo used this technique to split Ten-Tails into the Tailed Beast, giving each one form and life.

It is believed that the Izanagi is a derivative of this technique, as it also bends reality itself based on the user’s mind. While those with Yin-Yang Release can also create form, similar to how Naruto created a new eye for Kakashi, only Hagoromo has the power to use The Creation of All Things Technique due to the immense chakra requirement.

Treasured Tools of the Sage of Six Paths

Treasured_Tools_of_the_Sage_of_Six_Paths

While not an inherent ability, the Treasured Tools of the Sage of Six Paths are a part of Hagoromo’s arsenal of abilities. There are five tools in total; Kokinjo, Shichiseiken, Kohaku no Johei, Bashosen, and Benihisago. Each tool has a unique ability that aids the user in capturing the soul of the victim.

Benihisago is a gourd that can store the souls of people, and Kokinjo and Shichiseiken are used to siphon the souls into the gourd. Bashosen grants the user the ability to use all five nature transformations, while Kohaku no Johei can also seal the souls of people without any of the intricacies associated with Benigisago’s process. However, using the tools drains an excessive amount of chakra, meaning only Hagoromo could wield these weapons without harm.

Naruto is available to stream on Prime Video.
