This article contains spoilers from My Hero Academia’s Final Arc.

Summary

  • Shigaraki Tomura's original Quirk was not Decay but a floating ability, similar to Nana Shimura.
  • All For One gave Shigaraki his Quirk as a baby, which was originally a disintegration and reintegration power.
  • Shigaraki's powers were so great he could've devastated Japan; he had potential to become a hero with his original Quirk.

My Hero Academia finally gave fans a proper battle between Izuku Midoriya and Shigaraki Tomura in the final arc of the series and it goes without saying that this battle lived up to all the expectations and more. Although the finale wasn't to everyone's liking, most fans still enjoyed the clash to the fullest.

While the fight itself was fascinating, it also had other exciting elements to it, such as All For One taking control of Shigaraki Tomura and revealing bits from his past that even he wasn't aware of. One of the biggest details that All For One revealed was pertaining to his Quirk, which was actually not Decay at all. Now, with the release of the My Hero Academia Ultra Age Fanbook, fans finally know what Quirk Tenko had initially.

Shigaraki Tomura's Traumatic Childhood

  • Shigaraki Tomura Was Forcibly Given Decay
  • Shigaraki's Original Quirk Was Something Else Entirety

Fans know that Shigaraki Tomura is one of the strongest characters in My Hero Academia, and much of that is down to the incredible quirk that he possesses. Shigaraki's Quirk is decay and it allows him to disintegrate anything that he touches in an instant. After Reawakening the Quirk, Shigaraki could even disintegrate things without making direct contact, and channel his powers through other surfaces, such as the ground. By the time of the final war, Shigaraki's powers were so great that he could've devastated the entirety of Japan, if not more.

I'm not just a mere mortal anymore. I'm a symbol of fear! — Shigaraki Tomura

Shockingly enough, All For One revealed at the end of the story that Shigaraki's Quirk wasn't originally his at all. It was given to him by All For One when he was a baby. The worst part of it all was that this quirk was actually supposed to have a disintegration and reintegration power, similar to Kai Chisaki’a Overhaul, especially since it was likely based on his Quirk, to begin with.

Horikoshi Finally Reveals Shigaraki’s Original Quirk

Shigaraki Had A Floating Quirk, Like Nana Shimura

Finally, Shigaraki Tomura’s real quirk has been revealed to the fans in My Hero Academia, and it is one that fits him perfectly. Before Shigaraki for consumed and broken by the power of the Decay Quirk, he was a sweet boy who looked up to heroes, and most likely would've loved Nana Shimura. Just like her, Tenko had a floatation quirk, which would've allowed him to fly and soar the skies. Here's what Horikoshi had to say about this:

Question: What kind of quirk did Shigaraki actually have when he was born?

Horikoshi: The circular thing AFO had around him while floating was actually the basis of Tenko's quirk. However, since AFO beefed it up with various other quirks, the original one wasn't that strong.

Unfortunately, fans never got to see the quirk being used by Shigaraki originally, and all he was left with was a destructive power that he was cursed with by the man who controlled every single thing in his life. Regardless, it is nice to know that Shigaraki had a nice ability similar to a hero that would've helped him save thousands of lives had he gone on to become a Hero, like he originally wanted.
