This article contains spoilers for the MHA series.

My Hero Academia is one of the greatest and most recognizable series from Shonen Jump. This series, created by mangaka Kohei Horikoshi, quickly became a global hit. The manga series concluded, however, just last year, in 2024. MHA’s absence, alongside other big series like JJK, has definitely left a gap. Nevertheless, MHA had a great run.

When it comes to its ending, Deku lost his quirk, which was a controversial decision by the author. Shortly after, Deku did regain some powers, thanks to his new armor. Horikoshi reveals that this armor mimics One For All's abilities through various methods, such as cable extensions, and so on.

Despite the My Hero Academia series having ended, there have been instances where creator Horikoshi answers a multitude of questions concerning the characters and abilities. Horikoshi has especially had to do some explaining when it comes to Deku’s armor, since it never got a lot of coverage in the manga itself, only in the epilogue and last chapter.

Fans were always wondering what Deku's armor was capable of doing. Horikoshi recently revealed that it basically mimics the powers of One For All. For example, to mimic Black Whip, the suit uses cable extensions. He doesn’t go on to explain how every ability works, but fans get the idea he’s trying to convey. Deku's suit can:

  • Copy All One For All Powers
  • Use Cable Extensions For Black Whip
  • Allow Him To Float And Fly
  • Likely Store Kinetic Energy While Moving
  • Boost Physical Strength
  • Likely Sense Danger All Around Him
  • Allow Him To Use Smokescreens

Here’s the question and the exact answer that Horikoshi gave concerning this:

Question: How does the armor that Deku received from Class A function?

Horikoshi: It tries to mimic various OFA abilities; for example, it has cable extensions that function like his ability Black Whip. It also serves as a prototype where he can try to combine various abilities.

Deku’s Armor Is Great, But Fans Still Wish He Kept His Quirk

Taking Away Deku’s Quirk Was A Controversial Choice

Deku declares that he's here! - My Hero Academia

Deku’s hero armor, which he got after the conclusion of the events of the final war, has definitely been controversial, and many fans hate it. Horikoshi chose to take away Deku’s powers at the end of My Hero Academia, and in turn, make it almost impossible for him to become the greatest hero, even though that was his initial goal.

Deku returning to his quirkless state and becoming a school teacher was a huge disappointment. While many fans would’ve preferred Deku to retain OFA, at least the armor gave him the chance to become a hero once again and maybe even reach the Number 1 ranking someday.

After all, Deku isn’t too far from his goal right now, as he holds the number 4 spot in Japan, just behind Mt. Lady, Shoto Todoroki, and Mirio. His goal is now achievable once again.

The My Hero Academia manga concluded with 431 chapters for fans to read. All these chapters can be found on Manga Plus. When it comes to the anime, this series is still awaiting its final season, which will be released later this year. The series can be watched on Crunchyroll.
