My Hero Academia: Izuku Midoriya's Gearshift Quirk, Explained

Gearshift turned out to be one of Deku's most useful abilities despite its drawbacks. What makes it stand out?

What is Fa Jin?

One of the Oldest Quirks to Have Existed

Fa Jin is an emitter-type quirk that emerged at a time when meta-abilities and humanity's understanding of them were still in their infancy. Just like Gearshift, All For One, Life Force, One for All, and Spearlike Bones, it is one of the foundational quirks that shaped the human world in complex ways. Initially belonging to Bruce, the third user of One For All and a member of Kudo's resistance against All for One, the meta ability played a crucial role in the fight against forces of evil in the darkest of times.

Like other One for All inheritors, Bruce had a strong sense of justice and lost his life fighting All for One. Therefore, he was frustrated by Izuku Midoriya's absurd desire to rescue his arch-nemesis, Tomura Shigaraki, from the clutches of the Demon King. Disappointed in All Might's successor, Bruce was unwilling to help him harness Fa Jin. But on the insistence of Yoichi Shigaraki, he mentored Midoriya, which eventually helped the young hero manifest his quirk.

Fa Jin enables Izuku Midoriya to build up and store a tremendous amount of kinetic energy by performing repetitive movements. The meta ability allows the user to store this accumulated power for later use. When Fa Jin's inheritor subsequently releases the energy, it manifests in the form of a volatile burst of power and speed. The meta ability can be utilized with any part of the user's body, which subsequently emits red energy, creating a visual impact to indicate force being built up.

Once Fa Jin's power is accumulated by Midoriya after performing a series of repetitive actions, he can utilize explosive movement and energy to unleash a barrage of attacks on his adversary. Since he can accelerate faster than the speed of a bullet under Fa Jin's influence, Deku becomes extremely unpredictable and difficult to counter, forcing his adversaries on the back foot as he can overwhelm them with speed and ferocity at any moment.

One memorable instance of this is during his fight with Lady Nagant. In episode 134, titled "The Lovely Lady Nagant," Midoriya rescues Kai Chisaki by moving faster than Kaina Tsutsumi's bullet. While this heroic effort is impressive, Midoriya does not stop there and goes a step further by combining Fa Jin with other quirks and inventing new moves that make him appear invincible.

Fa Jin Ultimate Moves

Bruce's Meta-Ability When Combined With Other Quirks Becomes Extremely Efficient and Deadly

Fa Jin, as one of the oldest meta abilities in existence, is already extremely powerful, but it becomes an even more efficient tool when combined with other quirks to invent new ultimate moves. Faux 100 Percent is one such innovative move that is performed by Midoriya by thrusting himself in a particular direction using Blackwhip, following which he combines Fa Jin-generated kinetic energy and 45% of One For All's power. He performs this move in episode 136, titled "Deku vs. Class A," in an attempt to run away from his friends.

Faux 100 Percent: Manchester Smash is another ultimate move created by Midoriya by using Fa Jin with One for All and Blackwhip. In this technique, he utilizes Faux 100 Percent to move at blinding speed before landing an axe kick on his adversaries. During the Final War, Izuku develops one more move with Fa Jin and Blackwhip. He relies on the latter's strength and the former's energy to create a chain to ensnare Tomura Shigaraki. He then proceeds to take advantage of his restrained adversary's weakness and throw him to great distances.

During the same fight, Midoriya also combines Fa Jin with Gearshift to accelerate himself at supersonic speeds, making each of the ultimate moves performed in conjunction with it carry the power thus generated. The technique is extremely effective and has the potential to overwhelm even the strongest villains. All the ultimate moves invented with the help of Fa Jin elevate Izuku Midoriya's stature as a hero and help him become humanity's greatest hope in the Final War against All for One and his allies.

In My Hero Academia, some humans have superpowers called quirks. Izuku Midoriya, nicknamed Deku, is not one of them. Deku has always idolized heroes like the number one hero, All Might, and since he was a child, he has always wanted to be a hero. However, his lack of a quirk has always held him back, but a chance encounter with All Might after discovering a classmate in danger sets Deku on the path to becoming a true hero. My Hero Academia centers around Deku and a class of heroes-in-training at UA. This school shapes young quirk users into future heroes through fake rescue missions, combat training, and other hero-tempering tasks. With young Deku inheriting the "One-For-All" quirk, he will learn what it means to be a true hero while facing off with dastardly supervillains.
