The Gunga Mountain Villa Raid in My Hero Academia occurred in Season 6 and was perhaps one of the biggest turning points in the series. The aftermath of the raid turned public sentiment against heroes and created the right conditions for All for One to escape confinement and run rampant across Japan.
Although the raid technically ended in a success for the heroes in My Hero Academia, they incurred heavy losses. It was ultimately a setback for them as they lost public trust and could not stop the villain’s future moves.

What the Heroes Hoped to Accomplish
Thanks to the number two Pro Pero Hawks becoming a double agent embedded in the Paranormal Liberation Front (PLF), he discovered that the group’s commanders were meeting at their secret headquarters in Gunga Mountain Villa. Together with the police force, the heroes hatched a plan to infiltrate the villa and capture all the PLF leaders in one fell swoop. The PLF was a radical group composed of villains and former members of the Meta Liberation Army, who wished for ultimate Quirk liberation in society. These freedom fighters were willing to work with the League of Villains' members after their leader was defeated by Tomura Shigaraki to see their ideals realized.
“We strive for a society without order, pure freedom! The seeds have already been sown; you will be liberated soon!” -Rikiya Yotsubashi’s double monologuing before being disintegrated in Episode 127.
Dozens of pro heroes and UA students gathered for the raid on the compound, dividing into a primary raid team and a backup squad. The hero side contained some of Japan’s strongest heroes, including several in the top 10 like Edgeshot, Kamui Woods, Yoroi Musha, and Hawks. They hoped to use the element of surprise to overwhelm the PLF, defeating and capturing them before they could mount a proper defense. However, Tomura Shigaraki and the League of Villains’ assistance allowed the PLF to fight against the surprise attack, resulting in numerous civilian and hero casualties in the process.

The Heroes Claim Victory, But At a Heavy Cost
“In the aftermath of the destruction, I read the Safety Commission’s post-mortem report. Only then did I get a full picture of everything that went down that day.” -Izuku Midoriya narrates in Episode 127.
With the intervention of Tomura Shigaraki and the extremely powerful Gigantomachia, the surprise raid on Gunga Mountain Villa quickly spun out of control. The heroes managed to successfully capture many PLF members, but several were also able to escape. Before being stopped from his rampage, Gigantomachia helped rescue several League of Villains members and tore through many heroes and civilians, leaving a devastating trail in his wake before he was stopped. Many heroes were defeated in the day's events, with the Pro Hero Midnight being killed off-screen, likely in a brutal way.
“16,929 members of the PLF who had gathered at the Gunga Villa for a meeting were also apprehended. 132 members of the PLF, including several lieutenants, left the villa on Gigantomachia or fled in his wake and remain on the run.” -Izuku Midoriya describing the Gunga Villa Raid aftermath in Episode 127.
One thing that complicated the raid is that the heroes divided their forces for a simultaneous raid on Jaku Hospital, hoping to capture Tomura Shigaraki and the doctor helping All for One, Kyudai Garaki. The Jaku Raid arguably had a stronger lineup, which included top heroes like Endeavor, Eraserhead, Present Mic, Gran Torino, Mirko, and strong UA students like Deku, Bakugo, Todoroki, and Ingenium. If these heroes had been able to participate in the Gunga Mountain Villa Raid, it’s likely the casualties would not have been severe. Not only that, but the premature awakening of Tomura Shigaraki allowed Gigantomachia to activate, dooming both the Jaku Hospital Raid and the Gunga Mountain Villa Raid.
The destruction wrought by Gigantomachia, as well as the casualty toll from Tomura Shigaraki’s evolved Quirk, helped cause public sentiment to turn against the heroes. The public was also made aware of Endeavor’s troubled past and shown a broadcast of the hero Hawks brutally executing the Villain Twice, causing further doubts about the righteousness of Pro Heroes and their role as society’s protectors.
Ultimately, the heroes succeeded in capturing many villains and dealt a heavy blow to the PLF. Still, their public perception took a massive hit, setting the stage for the chaos that would fully bloom after All for One’s escape from Tartarus prison in My Hero Academia.
