My Hero Academia Season 8 Unveils Izuku Midoriya’s Carnage Form
Izuku Midoriya’s Carnage Form Gives Him an Unexpectedly Dark Edge
- Izuku Midoriya's carnage form is a reference to Marvel's villain, Carnage.
- Izuku Midoriya used carnage form in an attempt to transfer OFA quirks to Shigaraki Tomura.
Izuku Midoriya’s carnage form is the result of a last-minute effort to smash through Tomura Shigaraki’s ironclad hatred and resolve. In this unique transformation, Midoriya endures crippling pain and overwhelming strain, every movement a battle against his own body as he struggles to breathe and maintain control. Despite the odds, Midoriya’s carnage form is the best means to execute a wild plan against someone like Shigaraki who possesses decay and rapid regeneration.
What makes Izuku Midoriya’s carnage form stand out to fans is its unsettling, almost villainous appearance inspired by the Marvel villain of the same name, Carnage. Even Shigaraki himself thinks Midoriya looks villainous in this form, almost as if he isn’t the hero who’s trying to protect the world with everything he has. Still, despite its frightening appearance, Midoriya’s carnage form is yet another manifestation of his unwavering resolve to not just punish evil but also save Shigaraki.
Moreover, Midoriya’s carnage form is also known as Overlay, a name Horikoshi gave to probably emphasize the structured chaos of blackwhip tendrils and black lines appearing all throughout his beaten and busted body. While his transformation looks insane at first glance, underneath this exterior lies pain and suffering that Midoriya bears silently to survive until the end.
Izuku Midoriya’s Carnage Form Depends Largely on Blackwhip
Blackwhip Keeps Midoriya Izuku Alive and Moving
Without Blackwhip, Izuku Midoriya’s carnage form could never fully manifest. In this transformation, Blackwhip acts as both a lifeline and a weapon, allowing Midoriya to keep moving and breathing even as his body is pushed to the brink. Banjo’s quirk puppeteers Midoriya’s limbs, muscles, and tendons, compensating for the extreme strain and damage of Gearshift’s recoil and the Blackwhip tendrils.
My Hero Academia fans even compare Midoriya’s carnage form to a superpowered wheelchair, just to explain the form in simple terms. This is a grim yet fascinating visual that accurately describes how Blackwhip supports and extends Midoriya’s debilitated body while in carnage form. Beyond the pain and agony, Midoriya’s carnage form prevents him from being immobilized, allowing him to continue fighting.

In addition to Blackwhip, the second OFA user, Kudo, was the one who strongly encouraged Midoriya to continue fighting and moving while in carnage form. He knew that fighting Shigaraki, who just absorbed AFO, head-on was a losing battle at this point, so it’s best to come up with a different yet effective course of action to break through Tomura Shigaraki’s solid mass of hatred.
Izuku Midoriya’s Carnage Form Isn’t the Strongest
Midoriya’s Carnage Form Serves a Single Purpose
Despite the menacing look of Izuku Midoriya’s carnage form, fans know that it’s not the strongest among his transformations. After all, Midoriya's carnage form is mostly powered up by Blackwhip, which is why many other fans consider other forms, like Full Cowling at 100% or other One For All enhancements, to be more destructive in direct combat. It’s just that, in the final battle against Shigaraki, Midoriya’s carnage form was the perfect choice.
While in carnage form, Midoriya successfully passed the remaining OFA quirks to Shigaraki through blood transfer. This allowed the vestiges to make an impact internally, simultaneously forcing Shigaraki and Midoriya’s memories to blend together, instead of sticking to the original plan of defeating Shigaraki with Midoriya’s sheer strength. If Midoriya had not taken a risk at this moment, he would likely have been defeated as Kudo expected.
