Morty Smith is the grandson and timid side-kick of the eccentric mad scientist Rick Sanchez. He brings his unexpected courage and a plethora of weapons and gadgets his grandad invents for him to shoot, smash and fight foes in MultiVersus. Morty and his grandpa Rick were one of the most requested characters by MultiVersus's fanbase, with players excited to see what the duo would bring to the game.
Morty is a hybrid brawler with projectile-focused mage abilities. He has one of the highest ability counts in the game, tied with bugs bunny. Morty is arguably the most versatile character in the entire game, with a loaded kit consisting of projectiles, minor health regeneration, a teleporting ability, and Rick's iconic spaceship, amongst other things. His kit and playstyle bring exciting and dynamic gameplay to matches, making him formidable.
Playstyle
Morty is one of the eight members of the Bruiser class in MultiVersus. He has many abilities that enable him to have any playstyle a player wants according to the matchup that presents itself. However, all these are determined by the proficiency of the player piloting as Morty. Morty is described as an expert champion in MultiVersus and is not the optimal character choice for beginner players.
Morty has a hit-and-run playstyle, and although he is one of the Bruiser class, he doesn't have a lot of defensive options and requires proper spacing and a certain level of mastery of his abilities to stand a chance of winning games consistently.
Morty's combos are somewhat inconsistent and require a certain amount of practice to pull off without dropping consistently. A contributing factor as to why only expert players with experience and practice are able to bring out his full potential. Furthermore, Morty has a lot of combos, and knowing which ones are efficient and less risky as opposed to learning the flashier combos is advised.
Perks
Morty is a character that relies on utility to compensate for his weaknesses, such as being one of the slower champions and having some of his abilities like his neutral special,"Aw, Geez, Snakes," which fires snakes out of his gun on a higher cooldown. These weaknesses can be compensated for by equipping perks that enhance his mobility, acceleration, and cooldowns, such as Triple Jump, Aerial Acrobat, and Cofeezilla.
I'm More Than Just A Hammer
Perk Type: SIgnature.
How to Acquire: Unlocked after reaching mastery level 8 on Morty.
Ability: When Morty summons Hammer Morty, Morty will spin in a circle, hitting around himself multiple times.
Tips: This perk is an excellent combo extender with a large hitbox. It can predict player movement and may even catch players off-guard if they don't know the timing of the ability or its duration. It is entirely situational and should be picked with discretion as it can easily be punished since Morty can't stop during the animation of the ability.
Oh, That's Still A Grenade
Perk Type: Signature.
How to Acquire: Unlocked after reaching mastery level 10 on Morty.
Ability: The explosion radius of Morty's grenades is increased based on their cook duration. Grenades thrown by Morty's allies always have the maximum explosion radius.
Tips: This perk is exceptional on Morty and a safer pick than "I'm More Than Just A Hammer." Morty plays around creating space and pressuring with his handgun and grenades. This perk increases the range and effectively increases the chances of damaging an enemy with the explosion of his grenades.
Coffeezilla
Perk Type: Utility.
How to Acquire: Unlocked after reaching mastery level 15 on Morty.
Ability: Your team receives 10% reduced ability Cooldown duration. The bonus is increased to 15% if an ally selects this perk.
Tips: This is Morty's must-have perk, as it is the most beneficial for him. It offers a good amount of cooldown on his major abilities and lets him use them frequently since his gadgets are essential to his success in battles.
Ice To Beat You!
Perk Type: Offensive.
How to Acquire: Unlocked after reaching mastery level 11 on Steven Universe.
Ability: Your team's projectiles deal one stack of ice debuff if they knock enemies back. The bonus is increased to two stacks if an ally also selects this perk.
Tips: The amount of utility this perk gives is insane. It synergizes excellently well with Morty's grenades, forward-special "Power of Earth!" And even his Up-special "Aw Geez, More Snakes!" Enemies slowed with this perk are easier targets for Morty to hit or run away from, making it a useful niche perk.
Make It Rain, Dog!
Perk Type: Offensive.
How to Acquire: unlocked upon reaching mastery level 2 on LeBron James.
Ability: Your team receives a 10% increased projectile speedThe projectile speed is increased to 25% if an ally selects this perk.
Tips: This perk synergizes well with Morty's grenades which is his bread-and-butter ability. It makes the grenades harder to react to, thus effectively increasing his damage potential. This perk could especially make Morty excel with other ranged champions like Reindog and Gizmo, making them pesky and troublesome to play against.
An ideal Morty perk combination would be:
- Oh, That's Still A Grenade(Signature), Coffeezilla(Utility), Make It Rain, Dog! (Offensive), Ice To Beat You! (Offensive)
- I'm More Than Just A Hammer(Signature), Coffeezilla(Utility), Aerial Acrobat(Utility), and Deadshot(Offensive).
