Magic: The Gathering's Lorwyn Eclipsed was a massive hit for the community this January, and it was just the first out of seven sets being released in 2026 for the trading card game. Now, MTG's TMNT set is looming on the horizon, coming out for pre-release week on February 27, and then fully on March 6. This is the first of four Universes Beyond sets scheduled for this year. While the community hasn't been particularly fond of this decision, TMNT as a Magic set does seem to have several interesting cards, mechanics, and new products. TheBestWarGames attended a digital preview of what's coming to Magic: The Gathering's next set, including a unique board game.

TMNT's Mechanics in MTG Explained

One of the most interesting parts about the set is MTG's new mechanics. Though they were revealed on some cards already, they can be quite powerful and lead to fantastic combos in various deck archetypes and formats. These are:

  • Alliance
  • Disappear
  • Sneak

Alliance allows you to trigger an effect whenever another creature comes into play, and importantly, it isn't restricted to nontoken creatures. Since many creature-heavy decks in MTG rely on additional tokens to function, Alliance can be extremely strong there. Cards like Slash, Reptile Rampager deal damage to all opponents when another creature enters, and that alone can be great in Burn decks or Commander as a format.

Disappear and Sneak pair perfectly together, as the latter allows you to return an unblocked attacker to your hand to play a card for its Sneak cost, and the former's effects proc at the beginning of your end step if a permanent under your control leaves the field this turn. Disappear even works with MTG's Spider-Man mechanics, specifically, Web-slinging.

Say Hello to Magic: The Gathering's New Cooperative Board Game

Magic: The Gathering's newly revealed Turtle Team-Up is a unique take on the TCG, as it doesn't pit players against one another, but rather, it allows you to play with everyone else cooperatively. Details are still unclear at this stage, but it's basically the closest thing to a Magic: The Gathering board game, just with TMNT themes and characters. Each of the TMNT turtles will have a companion to spice gameplay up, and you will be able to play it solo as well as with up to 3 other people. This is a great way to introduce newcomers to MTG, and if successful, could become its own format further down the line, especially with its way to scale difficulty up or down depending on needs.

The inspiration for this product is one of MTG's formats, called Two-Headed Giant, where two players play against two other players.
