Loved the style and story of Deep Water? These films should quench anyone's thirst for psychological thrillers filled with lust and love. Recently released on Hulu and Amazon Prime, Deep Water is a gripping tale of a husband and wife unhappy in their marriage. While the wife brings a string of lovers into their lives, she ends up finding a lot of them going missing. The husband, too in love to get a divorce, is the prime suspect.
Ultimately, Deep Water takes viewers through a journey of trust from start to finish and is a rollercoaster in itself. So, after such an experience viewers can very easily be left wanting more of this style of film. Luckily there's some out there that any fan of Deep Water will adore.
8 Gone Girl
Starring Rosamund Pike and Ben Affleck, Gone Girl has particularly similar themes and ideas surrounding the story. It again follows a husband and wife in an unhappy marriage. Only this time the wife has gone missing, and all eyes are blaming the husband.
It's an incredible psychological thriller that leaves viewers guessing throughout, often believing the husband is innocent, then thinking he might be guilty. It's a wonderful film in which Affleck plays the part that has particularly similar tropes to his character in Deep Water. So if fans can't get enough of Affleck playing the slightly unhinged husband, Gone Girl has to be one to watch.
7 Fatal Attraction
Directed by the man who directed Deep Water, Adrian Lyne, Fatal Attraction is an older film than many consider to be one of the first and one of the best erotic psychological thrillers ever made. It's also Lyne's best-known film. Rightly so when considering the subject matter and the fantastic acting present throughout.
It tells the tale of a marital affair that quickly turns into an obsession which could be deadly if the protagonist doesn't act quickly. Ultimately, Fatal Attraction is easily one of Lyne's best creations, so any fan of the directing in Deep Water should watch Fatal Attraction.
6 Knock Knock
While Knock Knock may not be a particularly easy psychological thriller, turning more towards the horror genre, it still has the lust, manipulation, and desire that Deep Water possesses. It also stars Ana de Armas and Keanu Reeves, which creates a dynamic no one could have expected, but everyone needs to see.
Ana de Armas' acting performance in Deep Water was unbelievably good. She embodied the character perfectly and seems to perfectly capture the lusty wife who knows what she wants. This is what makes Knock Knock such a joy to watch. She plays the manipulative lusty woman who attempts to seduce Reeves, the loving husband. Perfect for any fan of Ana de Armas' performances.
5 Unfaithful
Lyne seems to thrive in directing good erotic, psychological thrillers and Unfaithful is nothing less than that. It derives from the book The Unfaithful Wife and tells the tale of a wife having an affair with a stranger. After the husband gets suspicious, things begin turning ugly, just like they do in many of Lyne's movies.
Unfaithful is the kind of film where many can probably predict the ending, just like Deep Water, but that doesn't make it any less entertaining to watch. This film is a rollercoaster of emotions spanning from confusion, tension, and surprise, just like Deep Water.
4 Bound
Bound was placed in the directing hands of two particularly famous directors, Lana and Lilly Wachowski, just before they created The Matrix. However, it still has their recognizable style and fantastic design embedded into this crime-filled neo-noir thriller in which two lovers plot against the gangster stopping them from being together in a wonderful heist.
It's a couple of worlds away from the rich lives of the Van Allen's but brings that problematic and almost forbidden love with something somewhere stopping them from being happy into the heartbeat of Bound. It's messy, filled with love and lust, and is a joy from start to finish.
3 Basic Instinct
As perhaps one of the most famous thrillers in the film industry, Basic Instinct is the perfect film to watch if the thriller aspect of Deep Water was the more gripping theme present. However, unlike Deep Water, the viewer will rarely be able to predict what will happen throughout this wonderful thriller. It's perfectly unpredictable and surprising, becoming a wonderful guessing game on who the killer really is.
It's worth noting that this film does contain some graphic content and has aged relatively badly when it comes to the depiction of bisexuality.
2 Indecent Proposal
Starring Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson and directed by Adrian Lyne, Indecent Proposal tells the story of a couple who may need to sacrifice their relationship to solve their financial troubles. It's a wonderful erotic drama that is surprisingly romantic yet problematic at the same time.
The acting and the directing are second to none and will thrill throughout, which is typical for most of Lyne's films. If the viewer enjoyed the directing style of Deep Water then anything directed by Lyne will be a hit.
1 Eyes Wide Shut
Eyes Wide Shut is famous for many reasons. It stars Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman and is the last film that was directed by Stanley Kubrick before he sadly passed away. Therefore, it does have a sizable following. However, it's not solely due to the director that this film has a following, it's also due to the fact that it's a great film.
It's absolutely erotic and undeniably thrilling to watch, with its own sprinkling of madness in the form of a masked cult and the problematic relationship between a husband and wife. It feels dramatically similar to Deep Water but has a different twist that any thriller fan will love.
Deep Water is available now on Hulu and Amazon Prime.
