As players earn renown in Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord, their clan will level up. Your clan level is one of the factors that determines how big your party size can be, how many companions you can recruit, and how many caravans or parties those companions can lead.
Getting your clan level as high as possible will be key to making yourself and your clan a major player in the world, even if you join a preexisting kingdom. There are only two methods for obtaining renown and doing so early on can be a little more difficult. Renown stays forever once earned and acts more like XP than a currency that can be spent.

How To Earn Renown Fast In Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord
The only two methods for getting Renown are by winning tournaments and winning battles. There is no set value to how much Renown is earned when battling enemies, instead, it is determined by how big the battle is and if you win. Simply taking part in a massive battle as a single lord leading your own troops will still only give you a small amount of Renown.
On the other hand, joining a Kingdom and becoming a Vassal will quickly let players can on other lords to lead large armies to fight in massive battles to gain much more renown. It will take some time before players are leading massive armies, and that is where tournaments come in. Tournaments also don't have a set value but the range of Renown for those who win is high compared to what players will usually earn in battles early into the game.
When first starting out the game, players should focus on completing as many tournaments as possible before joining a kingdom or creating their own. Without any kingdom affiliation, you'll be able to travel the world and compete in any tournament to rank up your clan a few times and get strong enough to join a kingdom. After joining a kingdom and becoming a Vassal, spend most of your influence on calling large armies and fighting in any wars your kingdom is involved in, as the values for these bigger battles will quickly surpass those from tournaments.

How To Compete In Tournaments In Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord
Tournaments happen just about every other day in any major city. They only happen during the daytime and should one not be held that day, simply wait a day or two in the city until the tournament begins. When in a city's menu, one option will be, "Go to the arena" which will open up the arena menu. In the arena menu, you can:
- Practice fight
- Join the tournament
- Watch the tournament
- Leaderboard
- Enter the arena
The leaderboard displays the tournament record for all lords in the world, but there is no reward for placing high beyond those you get for actually winning tournaments. Tournaments let players use whatever armor they currently have equipped, but will put them through four rounds of fights using various weapons common in the kingdom where the tournament is being held. Each round of every tournament is randomized, from group battles, one-on-ones, to battles of horseback, all while using every weapon there is.
Should players win a tournament, they will earn Renown as a reward, but also a very high-quality item, such as an armor piece, weapon, or horse. For those who don't invest much in smithing their own weapons, this is an easy way for players to get some of the best equipment in the game, all while leveling up stats for various weapon types. Should you die in a tournament, you won't progress and will be kicked out, but there are no other negative effects. You'll return to town fully healed and can move on to whatever is next without even needing to heal.
