Many anime fans love video games, which makes it even better when an anime show features characters who are gamers themselves. There are even anime series that center entirely around video games, such as New Game, an anime that focuses on a game development team's journey.
The well-known genre of isekai is a popular choice among manga and anime, and a lot of the time it focuses on the main character being teleported to the world of their favorite game. Sword Art Online is the best example of this, with Kirito and Asuna being teleported to Aincrad, an area in the virtual reality game from which the anime takes its name.
10 Umaru Chan
When anime fans think of a gamer girl in anime, they often think of Umaru. A popular and attractive student by day, and a crazy gamer by night. In the show, her indoor mode is a small hamster-like design, with a childish personality. This represents her clumsy nature and chaotic behavior when she's at home, much to the dismay of her older brother, Taihei.
Taihei often becomes frustrated with Umaru's annoying behavior, and it's not surprising at all. Umaru loves to stay up all night reading manga and playing her favorite video games, accompanied by her obsession with drinking copious amounts of cola.
9 Persona 5: Futaba Sakura
The popular video game Persona 5, also has an anime adaptation. In it, Futaba Sakura works with the Phantom Thieves and is their navigator through the palaces. Futaba loves to play video games and, before meeting the Phantom Thieves, she rarely leaves her room.
Futaba would stay cooped up inside her room all day on her computer, and the player can even make Joker play video games with her in the game version of Persona 5. Futaba is portrayed as a "nerdy" girl, who's interested in sci-fi, video games, and computers.
8 My Dress-Up Darling: Marin Kitagawa
Dress-Up Darling's Marin is a popular girl at her school, who is deemed attractive, sweet, and perfect in every possible way. This is why it was a complete surprise to Wakana Gojo when he discovers her little secret. Marin is an otaku, she loves watching magical girl anime and playing video games.
Marin's ambition is to become a cosplayer, and Gojo helps her to achieve her dreams by designing cosplay costumes for her. Fittingly, perhaps, her first cosplay is of Shizuku Kuroe, a character from one of her favorite video games.
7 Oreimo: Kirino
Kirino is obsessed with otaku culture. She tries her best to hide it, and, for a while, she does this successfully. However, her older brother Kyousuke eventually finds out and is shown her entire otaku collection that's hidden in her bedroom. Kirino persuades Kyousuke to try out her favorite games, and he soon finds out the type of games his sister likes to play, which are adult-rated video games.
This shocks Kyousuke, and it takes a while for him to truly accept it. Eventually, though, he realizes that these things make his sister truly happy and so he tries his hardest to support her and help her to find friends with similar interests in otaku culture.
6 Sword Art Online: Yuuki Asuna
As Sword Art Online is part of the isekai genre, it makes sense that Asuna from the anime is a gamer girl at heart. The entire concept of Sword Art Online revolves around the fact that all of the characters are playing a video game via a headset called NerveGear. After they begin playing though, they all get trapped inside of the game by the game's creator, Kayaba Akihiko.
As time goes by, the players all learn that they must survive in this world and fight their way to the top by defeating each boss. It takes a real gamer to want to try out a virtual reality VR headset for a Massively Multiplay Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG).
5 Recovery Of An MMO Junkie: Moriko Morioka
Moriko spends all of her waking hours playing her favorite MMO. Her addiction to this online video game caused her to lose friends and neglect her own personal well-being. The only joy that Moriko feels is when she logs into her favorite game, and the only times she actually leaves her house is to visit the store for groceries.
In the real world, Moriko is an extremely quiet person who tries her best to avoid all social contact with others. However, Moriko feels as though she can be her true self in her favorite online game, and therefore spends all day obsessively playing it.
4 New Game!: Aoba Suzukaze
New Game! Is a popular anime that focuses on a video game development team. All of the characters love to play video games, hence why they're game developers, but Aoba is especially obsessed with the medium.
Her love for video games led her to her dream career of being a game developer and she starts off by working on 3D modeling. Aoba works extremely hard to produce the best video games, as she knows exactly what gamers want. She dedicates her life to video games and her career within the gaming industry.
3 Blend S: Kaho Hinata
Blend S is an anime set in a maid cafe, where all of the maids each have different personalities. Kaho is the tsundere maid but is actually a sweetheart outside of work. She loves to play video games, and can often be seen struggling to hold her enthusiasm in when she overhears customers discussing games.
This makes her popular with otaku customers due to her charming tsundere persona and the fact that she has similar interests to them. The fans are told that Kaho spends most of her time in arcades, and this is where the majority of her money from work goes.
2 Gabriel Dropout: Gabriel White Tenma
This fantasy slice of life anime features Gabriel, an angel sent from Heaven, and one who was one of the best angels at her school. Sweet, empathetic, and caring, Gabriel was popular amongst her peers. That was until she landed on Earth and discovered video games.
It all started when she found an MMORPG on her laptop, thus turning her into a "Fallen Angel" due to her new obsession. Gabriel starts to selfishly lie and is deceptive toward her peers. Most of her actions are for the benefit of herself, and not for others.
1 Lucky Star: Konata
The blue-haired Konata loves to participate in otaku culture. Her favorite hobbies include playing video games, reading manga, and watching anime. Konata is extremely sarcastic towards her peers and always has her head in the clouds.
This is probably due to the fact that she stays up late at night playing video games, often leading to her having to study all the way through the night for school exams. Konata is actually pretty athletic, but she chooses not to join any after-school clubs as they conflict with her anime-watching schedule.
