The Boruto series is no stranger to negative reception, especially when it comes to its titular protagonist, Boruto Uzumaki. To this day, many fans refuse to treat Boruto as canon to the Naruto lore, mostly due to the change in environment, core themes, and especially the main character.
For them, it’s better to continue watching Naruto Uzumaki as Konoha’s Seventh Hokage instead of Boruto's journey.
However, Boruto Uzumaki isn’t the only character that can get an eye roll and raise an eyebrow from the fans. The sequel is stacked with unlikable characters, who, for one reason or another, struggle to win over the audience. Unfortunately, fans can’t stand them no matter what they do in Boruto.
Naruto: Why Kishimoto Needs To Do A Prequel To Boruto
Boruto is a disappointing sequel. Naruto has the potential for a prequel to Boruto.
Boruto Uzumaki
- Most fans hate Boruto because the sequel is about him instead of Naruto.
Boruto Uzumaki is the main character of the series, but that’s exactly the biggest reason why longtime fans can’t accept him. In short, Boruto isn’t Naruto. Worse, he’s the exact opposite of Naruto, who fought long and hard to get to where he is now.
As much as the creator wants the audience to avoid comparison, it’s inevitable for Boruto to be measured against one of anime’s beloved heroes. It is the perfect setup to receive constant backlash, so it’s not a surprise that Boruto remains a hated character in his own anime and manga.
Konohamaru Sarutobi
- Fans are disappointed with Konohamaru's power progression.
Growing up as one of Naruto Uzumaki’s rivals helped amplify the Will of Fire in Konohamaru Sarutobi’s heart. He wants to succeed Naruto as the next Hokage, but his disappointing performance in Boruto has strained his reputation. In addition, the series is no big fan of Konohamaru, making it difficult for fans to appreciate him better.
As the teacher of the new Team 7, Konohamaru should have been on the same level as, if not higher than, Kakashi Hatake. Despite his jonin status, he always relies on his students to rescue him in dire situations. Instead of leading the team, he often feels like its weakest link. Too bad, fans have big expectations for Konohamaru, but he never lives up to them.
Kawaki Uzumaki
- Fans dislike Kawaki for his reckless actions and questionable decisions.
The Boruto fandom is still divided when it comes to Kawaki Uzumaki. Some fans adore him for his cool personality and terrifying abilities, while others hate him for taking the spotlight away from Mitsuki and Sarada. In addition, fans refuse to forgive him after killing Boruto without hesitation and sealing Naruto away into the Daikokuten dimension.
Kawaki usually makes questionable decisions and continues to do so, even when those choices put others at risk and push him further down a dark and lonely path. No matter how cool Kawaki can be while fighting, his reckless decisions and refusal to trust others make it increasingly difficult for fans to fully support him.
Code
- Fans adored Code, but he is easy to manipulate.
Initially, Code was a fan favorite among fans mostly due to his cool personality and character design. Over time, he became an unlikable villain whose constant losses, repeated exploitation, and poor decision-making stripped away the characteristics that made him intimidating and compelling at the same time.
Remember when Code was the biggest villain in Boruto after Isshiki Otsutsuki? After Eida and Daemon used him, Jura and the Shinju Clones easily overpowered him. Post-time-skip Boruto even stomped him flat, turning what was once a terrifying villain into a joke of a character. The good news is that he can still redeem himself if the series allows.
Konoha Council
- The Konoha Council brings more problems than solutions to the Hokage and the village.
After Danzo Shimura’s death, the Konoha Council only had two members left, namely Homura Mitokado and Koharu Utatane. These two characters are notorious for getting in the way of progress, never failing to make questionable and outdated decisions that bring more harm than good in the Leaf Village.
In Boruto, the Konoha Council continues to meddle in the affairs of the village. While they believe they are maintaining peace and order in Konoha, they create unnecessary problems for Boruto and his allies. Not to mention, their timing is often terrible, adding pressure and tension at critical moments. No wonder most fans are waiting for them to die of old age.
Amado Sanzu
- Fans hate how Amado consistently withheld vital intel. He is overly suspicious.
Just like Naruto, the Boruto series never runs out of characters with hidden agendas, and Amado Sanzu is one of them. The mad scientist never fails to give everyone a headache for keeping vital information, manipulating his creations, and forcing others to doubt his real motives.
At this point in the story, Amado remains a suspicious character that fans refuse to trust. Time and again, his actions blur the line between ally and enemy. This has been Amado’s habit from the start, making it nearly impossible to predict his actions. He doesn’t think of anyone but himself and the resurrection of his daughter.
Mamushi
- His character design and personality are upsetting fans.
Mamushi is one of the latest additions to the wide cast of Boruto, yet he quickly earned the ire of many fans. For them, Mamushi’s character design is unpleasant to the eyes and, combined with his nasty and perverted personality, makes him even more unlikable. He may have a striking Shinju ability, but that’s not enough for fans to favor him.
On top of that, fans can’t help but feel underwhelmed whenever they see Mamushi’s Rinnegan. Instead of using his visual prowess to its maximum effect, Mamushi, just like the other Shinju Clones, ignores the powers of the dojutsu. It’s almost as if his Rinnegan is just part of his aesthetic, always on full display but not used.
Denki
- Fans believe Denki is too bland for the manga.
As fans know, Denki is an anime-only character, but that didn’t stop the fans from hating the young Kaminarimon. Unlike his classmates, Denki is weak in combat, which makes him bland and boring for fans. It’s rare to see him use a jutsu, let alone take down an opponent in a solo match. As such, fans believe he isn't suited for a shonen manga like Boruto.
While Denki usually shines in his own way when it comes to episodes where there are concerns about scientific ninja tools and technology in general, fans are still not impressed. After all, most fans of Boruto reject the integration of technological advancements in the plot, feeling that it undermines the essence of Naruto's ninja way.
