The cast of Bleach introduced anime fans to lovable and cool characters like Ichigo Kurosaki, Rukia Kuchiki, Chad, and many more. Plenty of Soul Reapers and even a few Arrancars were fan-favorites too, such as Toshiro and Grimmjow. But not everyone in Bleach won over fans, since some character designs are just plain annoying.
Whether it was intended or not, certain cast members in Bleach disgusted fans with their obnoxious and even problematic behavior. Perhaps those characters were written to serve as comic relief or contrast with the more serious characters, but it didn't work. Instead, Bleach ended up with some headache-inducing characters that the story -- and fandom -- could go without.
10 Anime MCs Better Than Ichigo Kurosaki
Ichigo is a great protagonist, but these anime MCs are just better.
Keigo Asano Provided Slice-of-Life Comedy That No One Needed
Keigo is the Kind of Character Who Inspired Minoru Mineta
The earlier episodes of Bleach, and a few later ones too, included some high school shenanigans. That meant Bleach fans spent time with Ichigo's classmates, and some of them felt like ridiculous stock characters. The single worst offender is a certain Keigo Asano, a carefree and excitable student who gets way too excited about attractive women. When My Hero Academia created the super-pervert Minoru Mineta, the anime no doubt took a few cues from characters like Keigo.
It's true Keigo had a decent scene where he helped Ikkaku and Yumichika find lodging for the night after his big sister Mizuho agreed to it. Otherwise, Keigo is unbearable as a skirt-chasing cliche who evidently has nothing better to do. Some anime fans will be more bothered than others by Keigo's lustful ways, but all fans may agree that he's annoying and has no real strengths to lean on.
Chizuru Honsho Has a Predatory Attitude Around Orihime at School
LGBT Anime Characters Can Be So Much Better Than This
A few of Ichigo's non-fighter classmates were bearable, such as Mizuiro, but not all. Aside from Keigo Asano, Chizuru Honsho was the most problematic and annoying character at the school, and for remarkably similar reasons as Keigo himself. Like Keigo, Chizuru is far too enthusiastic about chasing cute girls. However, this also means Chizuru is guilty of terrible LGBT/queer representation.
Bleach: Strongest Characters In The Anime, Ranked
The Bleach anime is packed with powerful Shinigami, Sternritter, and Espada. Here are the strongest characters.
Fortunately, Chizuru toned this way down in later episodes, and she didn't do anything like that during her brief time in the Thousand-Year Blood War Arc. But the fact remains she overplayed her hand as a protective, obnoxious girl who was determined to shield Orihime from harm. Then, when Orihime "owed" Chizuru for that protection, Chizuru felt entitled to act quite inappropriately with Orihime.
Nnoitora Gilga Seemed Determined to Make Everyone Despise Him
Nnoitora's Motives Were Shallow and Revolting
It was a given that many of the villainous Arrancars would be unlikable. At least some of them were halfway sympathetic, such as Coyote Starrk and Tier Harribel, and some were cool, such as Grimmjow and Ulquiorra. But there is no defense for the 5th Espada, Nnoitora Gilga, who was simply too repulsive to bear. He shared Grimmjow's dream of being the most powerful Arrancar of all, but his methods for getting there left everything to be desired.
While Grimmjow had some semblance of honor and fair play while battling Ichigo, Nnoitora glady fought dirty and even defended that strategy verbally at one point. Worst of all, Nnoitora is a male chauvinist who stated his opposition to any woman who is stronger than him or other male warriors. There was hardly an in-universe prompt for that either, since Soul Reapers, Quincy, and most other Arrancar clearly have no problem with powerful women like Yoruichi, Bambietta Basterbine, and Harribel.
Hiyori Sarugaki is Yet Another Violent Tsundere in a Cast Full of Them
Hiyori is a Much Worse Rukia
The Bleach anime can get away with writing feisty characters who blend charm with a sharp tongue and short fuse, from Ichigo and Rukia to Riruka Dokugamine. However, that formula turned sour with the minor hero Hiyori Sarugaki, one of the eight Visored warriors. Hiyori wasn't quite a terrible character, but she did annoy Bleach fans by being yet another violent tsundere.
Hiyori almost made fans sympathetic during a flashback sequence, where she missed Captain Hikifune, who had been like a mother to her. Then, Hiyori ruined it by hotly rejecting Kisuke to his face and even kicking him between the legs. Hiyori barely toned it down in her Visored days, either, often attacking Shinji and Ichigo, with or without provocation. Mercifully, Hiyori toned it down a bit more in the Thousand-Year Blood War Arc, making her marginally more tolerable.
Candice Catnipp's Temper and Vanity Made Her an Irritating Sternritter
Candice's Reckless Temper Also Got Her Into Trouble on the Battlefield
The Sternritter, like the Arrancars before them, were bound to be unpleasant people for the most part, given their antagonistic role. That being said, some of these Quincy felt cool or compelling, such as the goofy Askin or the princely Jugram. As for the all-female Bambis squad, fans took a liking to the fierce Bambietta, but her friend Candice Catnipp is another story. At best, Candice is redundant with Bambietta as a hot-blooded Quincy girl who fights recklessly.
10 Strongest Bleach Characters (Right Now)
These are the strongest characters Bleach has as of right now.
At worst, that also makes Candice annoying as a rowdy side character who lacks a sympathetic or cool side to balance out her hotheaded antics. What is more, Candice pestered both Ichigo and viewers with fluff dialogue and silly arguments, such as whining when Ichigo got her carefully-styled hair dusty. As for motives, Candice was eager to personally kill Ichigo to earn a favor from Yhwach, but that selfish goal meant little to Bleach fans and just made her more tiresome to watch.
Marechiyo Omaeda Delivers Results as a Braggart, But Only Barely
Sui-Feng Needs a New Lieutenant in Squad 2
Squad 2 Lieutenant Marechiyo Omaeda will sometimes put his money where his mouth is, such as when he battled Nirgge Parduoc in the fake Karakura Town. It was actually fun to see Marechiyo fool that Arrancar into thinking he was slow and helpless, only to take Nirgge by surprise with his flash step. Other than that, Marechiyo is all bark and too little bite.
It's vaguely funny to see a burly, vain man like Marechiyo serve in a squad of ninja-like Soul Reapers, but the novelty wore off sooner than later. Before long, Marechiyo felt like a gag that was played out, and only the annoying parts remained. Marechiyo had far too little personal growth to fill that empty space, even counting the time he fought hard to protect his family from BG9.
Loly Seemed to Exist Purely to Torture Orihime in Las Noches
Loly Couldn't Pick on Anyone Her Own Size
Bleach has a remarkable number of annoying hotheads, often female ones, who did more harm than good when it comes to charming anime fans. Yet another example is the minor Arrancar named Loly Aivirrne who, along with her friend Menoly Mallia, bullied Orihime. It seemed that was their only role in the story, giving Orihime a problem for Grimmjow to fix for her as a rogue antihero.
Loly's motives were far too shallow and self-serving to be anything but infuriating to watch. For whatever reason, she nursed a serious infatuation on Sosuke Aizen the villain, feelings that Aizen certainly didn't return. Evidently, that crush served one purpose: to make Loly jealous at the attention Aizen gave Orihime as his special guest in Las Noches. To round things out, Loly acted tough but never backed it up with her actions against foes like Grimmjow, Yammy, and Quilge Opie.
