Striving to change the way MMORPG lovers look at the idea of sandbox gameplay, Mortal Online 2 tasks players with living an entirely new life in a world theirs for the taking. Aside from options to mix and match bloodlines and a bustling customization system, Mortal Online 2 allows players to take on professions on top of a lack of built-in classes. However, just because Mortal Online 2 doesn’t have any classes doesn’t mean players can go up close and personal in fights.
In fact, players new to Mortal Online 2 can find a whole assortment of unique Melee Builds to choose from, with differences lying in weapon choice and stat progression. Considering the MMO’s sandbox nature, just how can Melee Builds thrive in the game?
Traditional Foot Fighter
- Main Traits: Oghmir, 30yo, Stout
- Stat Priorities: Constitution, Strength, Dexterity
- Skill Priorities: Axes, Defensive Stance, Endurance, Archery, Blocking
Given how expansive the combat options are in Mortal Online 2 gameplay, players can’t be blamed for wanting something plain and simple. This Traditional Foot Fighter provides a decent introductory take to Mortal Online 2’s mechanics that prove sustainable in the long run, where players can enjoy the Stout Oghmir for its inherent boosts to Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution for better endgame performance.
Touting an Axe and a Tower Shield, the Traditional Foot Fighter setup should provide decent defenses with durability that forces opponents to avoid players due to their sheer advantage in Hit Points. The weight of the Tower Shield should alter the trajectory of attacks just enough for opponents to get disoriented with combat adjustments but at the cost of a steep combo learning curve. Lastly, the Archery specialization exists to ensure players don’t waste Stamina chasing an opponent. Instead, they can simply pick them off from a distance.
Magic Knight
- Main Traits: Human, 30yo, Stout
- Stat Priorities: Strength, Intelligence, Dexterity
- Skill Priorities: Aggressive Stance, Combat Manouvering, Elementalism, Ritualism, Elementalism, Swords
A mage knight is almost always a go-to build for anyone trying a fantasy sandbox like Mortal Online 2, with this Magic Knight meeting the best of both devastating spells and decent combat prowess. These benefits are courtesy of its base traits as a Stout Human for its increased Attribute Points, which can then blend well with Human Warcry that can extend Magic Resistances to allies on top of a one-bar Mana Pool for tactical assaults.
However, players must be careful with resource and combat management as this Magic Knight build falls short of a traditional Dex Footie in the speed department and lacks the robust magical damage of a typical Fat Mage. A one-bar Mana Pool means the Magic Knight begins combat with the option of either saving their Mana for heals or dumping aggro via AOEs. Players can focus on Ritualism/Necromancy for a traditional melee approach or go for Elementalism for spell barrages before a melee finisher with a preferred Mortal Online 2 weapon like Swords.
Magic Bounty Hunter
- Main Traits: Human, 30yo, Stout
- Stat Priorities: Strength, Intelligence, Dexterity
- Skill Priorities: Aggressive Stance, Combat Maneuvering, Defensive Stance, Necromancy, Mounted Combat
Players enjoying the sandbox element of Mortal Online 2 gameplay can transform their experience akin to The Witcher via this Magic Bounty Hunter build. Essentially a Light Armor variant of the Magic Knight, this Magic Bounty Hunter setup gives players an extended Mana Pool due to the lighter equipment and a much-needed speed boost for better positioning. Key additions to this build are a focus on Mounted Combat and Defensive Stance, giving players room for better blocking and dodging while at the same time emphasizing open-world traveling - similar to Black Desert Online builds that emphasize mobility.
When combined with the existing Aggressive Stance and Necromancy of the original Magic Knight build, this modified Magic Bounty Hunter enables players to cast more offensive spells from their kit. Bonding their horses with Necromancy gives players a bit of damage mitigation, and the specialization in Mounted Combat allows players to dismount from horses quickly should the fight be taken into traditional melee.
Thursar Gladiator
- Main Traits: Thursar, 30yo, Stout
- Stat Priorities: Strength, Constitution, Dexterity
- Skill Priorities: Aggressive Stance, Anatomy, Archery, Blocking, Swords, Axes, Spears, Endurance
Races play a bigger role in Mortal Online 2 gameplay, where even the minutest change of Races and Bloodlines can significantly alter the stats of a character. This Thursar Gladiator takes advantage of the combat potency of the Thursar, whose Haven options can be customized to deal more raw damage and enjoy boosted regeneration while also having a teensy bit of Mana for an emergency Cleanse for survival.
The point of this Thursar Gladiator build is hyper-proficiency in dueling courtesy of Aggressive Stance, Blocking, and Endurance, with the Thursar Gladiator kit enjoying the flexibility of multiple weapons. Save for a Tower Shield for the best full-body protection, this Thursar Gladiator can rely not just on standard swords but also axes, depending on the player’s preference. Thanks to this build’s preset as a standard Dex Footie, the Thursar Gladiator can benefit from efficient repositioning or even merciless chasing of deadly enemies, similar to the dodging-oriented gameplay of Elden Ring.
Mage Killer
- Main Traits: Human, 30yo, Stout
- Stat Priorities: Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Constitution
- Skill Priorities: Aggressive Stance, Combat Manouvering, Ecumenical Spells, Mounted Combat, Mounted Magery
Players who got used to Mortal Online 2 gameplay will know precisely how annoying magic users are, especially Fat Mages on horseback who seem to cripple setups regardless of their opponent. This is precisely the target of the Mage Killer build, a playstyle explicitly designed to be able to chase mages on either horseback or on foot, disarm and unhorse them, and finish them off in the melee. The Mage Killer playstyle capitalizes on a 30yo Stout Human with heavier 2H Swords that do massive damage up close.
Key to the build is training in Mounted Combat and Mounted Magery, giving players the added mobile incentive of having a mount capable of outpacing mages who prefer their version of mounted spellcasting. Intelligence and Ecumenical should be just enough to cast a few select spells, be it personal healing for the player or finishing off either the enemy mage or their horse. Ecumenical is especially a decent Skill to invest in here, with Spell Reflect capable of protecting player horses - evidently one of the first targets of a mage opponent.
Solo Foot Fighter
- Main Traits: Thursar, 30yo, Stout
- Stat Priorities: Strength, Constitution, Dexterity
- Skill Priorities: Aggressive Stance, Combat Maneuvering, Combat Weapon, Archery, Blocking, Controlled Riding, Sprinting
It’s not always that players of Mortal Online 2 can get other gamers to team up with and enjoy the game to its fullest, so it’s ideal for them to have a reliable build like the Solo Foot Fighter that can help them play solo when necessary. Compared to other builds, this Solo Foot Fighter setup is a traditional presentation of the Footie archetype that relies heavily on dexterous movement on foot. This kit starts with a 30yo Stout Thursar that already makes for a durable target with additional focuses on high-enough Dexterity and Sprinting to ensure players can pace themselves properly in any combat situation.
Interestingly enough, it wouldn’t hurt for players to invest a bit in Controlled Riding just to ensure they have the convenience of a mount whenever they need to travel extended distances. Moreover, investing rather somewhat in both Aggressive Stance and Blocking should give players enough room to go all-out against opponents with room for proper parrying. Archery is a worthwhile investment for long-distance incursions, especially in team fights where chasing an opponent leaves players wide open for retaliation. This weapon-switching strategy is similar to builds in Path of Exile, where players always have to think of secondary combat options.
Mortal Online 2 was released on January 25, 2022 for the PC.
