Summary

  • Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is shutting down after just one year, disappointing fans of the action-adventure game.
  • NetherRealm's mobile team was recently dissolved.
  • No plans to shut down Mortal Kombat Mobile have been announced yet.

Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is shutting down just one year after its release. Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is an action-adventure beat 'em up game released for mobile devices in October 2023. The game launched just one month after Mortal Kombat 1, and eight years after the previous MK mobile game, the aptly-named Mortal Kombat Mobile.

Mortal Kombat: Onslaught was developed by NetherRealm's mobile team. Recently, NetherRealm was hit with layoffs, with the studio's mobile division shut down as a result. It seems likely that this played a role in the decision to shut down Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, though a specific reason for the game's shut down has yet to be shared.

A specific shut down date for the Mortal Kombat: Onslaught mobile game has not been announced at the time of this writing, but it has been confirmed that the game will cease operations in October of this year. While most Mortal Kombat fans are likely concerned about console games like Mortal Kombat 1, this is still undeniably sad news for the franchise.

When is Mortal Kombat: Onslaught Shutting Down?

  • October 2024

Mortal Kombat fans on mobile will be the most disappointed about Mortal Kombat: Onslaught shutting down, but they will still have Mortal Kombat Mobile to play in the meantime. Whereas Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is a beat 'em up, Mortal Kombat Mobile is a more traditional fighting game. It basically tries to translate a traditional Mortal Kombat fighting game experience to iOS and Android. Mortal Kombat Mobile is still getting new content, with Spawn recently added to the roster. Spawn was previously featured in Mortal Kombat 11 as one of that game's guest characters.

In the wake of the NetherRealm layoffs, it remains to be seen just how much support Mortal Kombat Mobile will get moving forward. The game is apparently popular enough to justify keeping it online, whereas the same can't be said for Mortal Kombat: Onslaught. It's possible Mortal Kombat Mobile will continue receiving new updates that add fresh playable characters to the game, but it's also possible that NetherRealm will shift its focus to other projects.

NetherRealm's next game has not been announced just yet. The studio is still busy working on Mortal Kombat 1, having teased plans to reveal Kombat Pack 2 at San Diego Comic Con on July 26.
