After nearly two years of active updates and DLC releases, the latest entry in Mortal Kombat’s 33-year-long franchise, Mortal Kombat 1, was classified as complete with the May 2025 digital release of Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition. While Mortal Kombat 1 is still receiving online multiplayer support, fans were uncertain what the Mortal Kombat franchise would do next, until June 2025’s Sony State of Play event brought the announcement of Digital Eclipse’s upcoming Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection. A compilation game featuring 19 versions of several classic Mortal Kombat titles so far, Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection currently has no official release window. However, Legacy Kollection may have a perfect release date already slated if the supposed leak turns out to be true.
Rumor: Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection Release Date Leaked
Mortal Kombat fans point out that the release date of the highly anticipated Legacy Kollection has seemingly leaked via an unexpected source.
Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection’s Leaked Release Date Explained
When Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection was first announced, Digital Eclipse only confirmed that the game would debut sometime in 2025 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox, and PC platforms. Little is still currently known about Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection with the current game roster for the Legacy Kollection currently including:
- Mortal Kombat (1992)
- Mortal Kombat II
- Mortal Kombat 3
- Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3
- Mortal Kombat 4
- Mortal Kombat Advance
- Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance
- Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition
Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection will feature Arcade, Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Game Boy, Game Gear, Sega 32X, and Game Boy Advance versions of the aforementioned games, but Digital Eclipse suggested that more games could be included in the Kollection.
News on Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection has been relatively barren since the State of Play, but a new supposed leak suggests that fighting game fans may be able to get their hands on the compilation sooner than expected. According to Reddit user ByrdofMemes, the Xbox app has supposedly leaked Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection’s release date, with the app listing the compilation as launching on Monday, September 29 later this year. Screenshots of the listing have since come to the surface, though Digital Eclipse has not yet confirmed whether this release date for Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection is true. Currently, the app lists Legacy Kollection as launching on Wednesday, December 31, though this is very likely a placeholder until Digital Eclipse formally announces the compilation’s launch date.
The Potential Tie-In of Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection
While the authenticity of Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection’s supposed release date remains to be determined, with some fans even claiming that the game may debut on September 30, this leaked release date could potentially be intentional if proven to be true. September 29 is just one day away from the start of October and the Halloween month is already expected to be an exciting time for Mortal Kombat fans, with New Line Cinema’s Mortal Kombat II film slated to debut on Friday, October 24. If Legacy Kollection’s leaked release date turns out to be true, it would give players about three weeks to relive the classic Mortal Kombat 2 and other celebrated Mortal Kombat games ahead of the film’s premiere.
Sales of Mortal Kombat 1 have so far been notoriously low, especially compared to the sales of Mortal Kombat 11, but the upcoming release of Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection and Mortal Kombat 2 could help revitalize the Mortal Kombat franchise. For example, with Legacy Kolletion featuring some of the franchise's most iconic titles and online multiplayer with rollback netcode, it could potentially attract both older fans striving to relive nostalgic moments and younger fans who never had a chance to play old Mortal Kombat arcade cabinets. This, in turn, could motivate players to watch the Mortal Kombat II film and potentially lead to people trying out Mortal Kombat 1 due to it being the most recent mainline Mortal Kombat game.
