The Mortal Kombat 11 community is increasingly hyped for the release of the fighting game's next DLC character, the Joker. NetherRealm, or more specifically creative director and Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon, is making the most of the excitement. Earlier today, Boon posted another teaser for the Joker to his Twitter account, showing one of the Joker's in-game victory cinematics. Joker fans may be especially fond of this victory screen, as it's a reference to a classic Joker film moment.
Boon's tweet provides a basic narration for the short Mortal Kombat 11 victory cinematic. His tweet reads, "Click, click, click... What the f--BOOM!!" Which may be all some fans need to figure out the clip. The attached video shows that Joker's placed a number of bombs around their defeated opponent. As the Joker walks away, he pulls out a detonator and gives it a click. The detonator doesn't trigger, so Joker clicks it a few more times before the bomb suddenly and surprisingly goes off in the background.
The reference is rather overt. During The Dark Knight film from Christopher Nolan, Heath Ledger's Joker is walking away from a hospital shortly after he triggered a series of bombs. The explosions suddenly stop and Ledger's Joker turns, confused. He clicks his detonator a few more times before the explosions suddenly start once more. Mortal Kombat 11's Joker victory scene isn't a one-to-one recreation of the scene, but it's very clearly a direct reference.
This isn't the first of Joker's victory screens to be shared. In the recently released Mortal Kombat 11 gameplay trailer for the Joker, his first victory sequence is shown. In that cinematic, the Joker pulls out a revolver and fires it into the air several times. The gun then misfires several times before Joker points it in the direction of the player. The final pull of the trigger has a sign with "BANG" written on it come out of the gun.
If anything's clear, it's that the developers at NetherRealm Studios are huge fans of the Joker. What's been shown so far of the upcoming DLC fighter for Mortal Kombat 11 has been rife with references to the Batman movies and comics. Even the Joker's first revealed Fatal Blow is a reference to the classic issue where the Joker kills Robin with a crowbar. NetherRealm is making sure that Mortal Kombat 11 players who pick up the DLC fighter will get their money's worth.
Mortal Kombat 11 is available now on Google Stadia, Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
