Mortal Kombat 11 developer NetherRealm Studios is getting into the holiday spirit and giving the popular fighting game a festive makeover.

NetherRealm has announced the upcoming launch of a holiday celebration for Mortal Kombat 11, which will consist of two separate events for the game’s Towers of Time mode. Winter Wonderland launches this weekend and will run from December 22 through December 27, and the Ring in the New Year event begins December 28 and ends January 2, 2020.

The first Tower event, Winter Wonderland, will feature three Towers with a variety of holiday-themed modifiers including Killer Kanes, Sledding Tarkatans, Parachuting Ginger Deadmen, Exploding Snowmen, Christmas Trees, Menorahs, Dreidels and Shooting Stars. The Ring in the New Year event will also have three themed Towers to round out the end-of-year festivities, but the modifiers will be more party-centric with a disco ball, champagne bottles, party poppers, fireworks, and a clock to count down to the new year.

The two events will be released as a free update for all Mortal Kombat 11 players, and participating will give players the opportunity to earn fun rewards like special character skins, holiday-themed consumables, and player module pieces.

The Towers of Time is a new game mode in Mortal Kombat 11 that’s a cross between the multiverse mode found in Injustice 2, also developed by NetherRealm Studios, and Mortal Kombat X’s Towers mode. The Towers of Time offer both preset and randomized challenges for players who want to test their prowess against NPCs in a series of battles. Each fight has a special modifier or challenge, such as a poison-based modifier that drains your offensive and defensive meters and gives it to your opponent. Successfully fighting through the Towers will earn players character-specific cosmetic rewards like skins and costumes.

The 11th game in the main Mortal Kombat series was released in April 2019 to largely positive reviews from both critics and players. In addition to the Towers of Time mode, the game features a story mode that allows players to take on the role of a variety of characters from the franchise’s 27-year history. And a deep customization system gives players the ability to personalize their fighters by unlocking skins, gear, special abilities, and other moves through gameplay.

Mortal Kombat 11 is available on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
