Mortal Kombat 1 director and series co-creator Ed Boon is promising some major balance updates to go with the next DLC character, Takeda Takahashi. In the months after Mortal Kombat 1 launched to mostly positive reviews, developer NetherRealm Studios has been refining and improving its latest 2D fighting game with gameplay tweaks and additional playable characters for both the main roster and secondary Kameo support fighters. So far, the former has consisted of Omni-Man, Quan-Chi, Peacemaker, Ermac, and Homelander.
The next Mortal Kombat 1 DLC fighter will be Takeda Takahashi, a member of Scorpion’s Shirai Ryu clan and the son of MK 1 base roster member Kenshi Takahashi in the original Mortal Kombat timeline. Introduced in Mortal Kombat 10, Takeda is part of the so-called 'Kombat Kids,' a new generation of warriors descended from EarthRealm’s old protectors who serve as the protagonists of MK 10’s story. He will make the jump to Mortal Kombat 1’s rebooted universe on July 23 alongside the new Kameo fighter Ferra.
Ed Boon, the director of Mortal Kombat 1 and one of the creators of the MK franchise, recently confirmed that Takeda Takahashi will be playable at the EVO 2024 tournament on July 19, just a few days before he is set to be added to the game in full. This news was heralded by a brief teaser video on Boon’s Twitter account, showing the young Shirai Ryu getting ready to battle Smoke using his signature bladed whips. This wasn’t the only announcement Boon made, as he also stated that the upcoming EVO build will include bug fixes and a balance patch with “significant improvements” to other characters.
Takeda And New Balance Updates Are On The Way For Mortal Kombat 1
While Ed Boon didn’t release any detailed patch notes for this update, he gave a few examples of what will be tweaked. The vampiric MK 1 combatant Nitara is set for some “serious buffs,” while others like Li Mei, Quan Chi, and Scorpion will see altered moves and combos. Mortal Kombat 1 Kameo fighters like Frost, Scorpion, Sektor, Cyrax, and Goro will also be updated. According to Boon, these improvements were inspired by recent fan polls regarding which characters players wanted to see get balance changes. A full list of patch notes will be revealed next week.
There is a lot on the horizon for Mortal Kombat 1, as NetherRealm is set to reveal its Year 2 DLC plans at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con on July 26. Rumors suggest that these plans could include new guest fighters like Conan the Barbarian and the Ghostface Killer from Scream in addition to returning favorites such as Sektor and Noob Saibot. Before that, Takeda Takahashi is on his way for his playable debut in Mortal Kombat 1, and he’s bringing some much-requested roster balance updates with him.
