Summary

  • Mortal Kombat 1 is receiving new story DLC and surprises, continuing to add new content over a multi-year period.
  • The game's roster is expanding with DLC fighters, including guest characters from other franchises like Invincible and The Boys.
  • Fans can expect more exciting content, including a full-fledged DLC story chapter and surprises, in the coming years.

Mortal Kombat 1 creative director and franchise co-creator Ed Boon is promising some big surprises for players, including a new story DLC expansion in a similar vein to Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath. After about a year of hype, the latest chapter in the Mortal Kombat franchise launched to rave reviews and chart-topping sales in September. Mortal Kombat 1 serves as a reboot to the long-running MK storyline, featuring new versions of classic characters in an altered timeline created by the Fire God Liu Kang that is soon threatened by dark forces from the past.

As has been the case with every new Mortal Kombat entry since 2011’s Mortal Kombat 9, NetherRealm is building on Mortal Kombat 1’s roster with DLC fighters, including a handful of guest combatants from other franchises. So far, Mortal Kombat 1 has been invaded by the sinister Omni-Man of Invincible fame, with the evil necromancer Quan Chi being the next character to be added following his non-playable supporting role in the main MK 1 campaign. Other DLC characters confirmed for Mortal Kombat 1 so far include the deadly Homelander from the hit TV series The Boys, Peacemaker from DC Comics, and popular Mortal Kombat regulars Ermac and Takeda.

What to Expect From Mortal Kombat 1 DLC Character Quan Chi

Mortal Kombat 1's first Kombat Pack will make Quan Chi playable for the first time since MKX, and he will likely play similarly.

NetherRealm has much more in store for Mortal Kombat 1 fans than just a few extra fighters, as revealed by Ed Boon during the recent CCXP23 event in Brazil. Boon announced that his team plans to continue adding new content to Mortal Kombat 1 over a multi-year period, and that said content will include a new story campaign. “Just like we did with MK11, we’re going to release a second part with more story, and we have a big surprise after that,” Boon revealed during the WB Games panel, though he naturally remained tight-lipped about what other surprises will come.

Boon’s comments about continuing to support Mortal Kombat 1 for a very long time are certainly on-brand for NetherRealm, as Mortal Kombat 11 would receive new characters and story content until 2021 - a good two years after it was released in 2019 and less than two years before Mortal Kombat 1 came out. CCXP23 also provided fans with an extended look at the aforementioned Quan Chi in action, as well as a brief glimpse of both Peacemaker and Mortal Kombat Trilogy hidden character Khameleon as a new Kameo fighter.

There has already been plenty of exciting new content added to Mortal Kombat 1 in the months since its release, including new holiday-themed Fatalities and character campaigns for its online Invasion mode. Ed Boon promises even more where that came from, including a full-fledged DLC story chapter that will likely continue where MK 1’s chilling post-credits cliffhanger left off. Boon also says that other surprises are in the cards, and players can look forward to even more of Mortal Kombat 1 over the next couple of years.
