Mortal Kombat 1 had a somewhat controversial main roster, but it brought back several iconic characters to the franchise. However, there was one particular fighter, Shang Tsung, who was initially exclusive to fans who pre-ordered the game.
This left many Mortal Kombat 1 fans thinking that obtaining this character was impossible once the game was released, which was a disappointment for several fans. However, there is still a way to unlock Shang Tsung. All players need to do is spend a few dollars in the in-game shop.

How to Unlock Shang Tsung
To get Shang Tsung, players will need to purchase the character as a separate DLC. For that, they must head to the in-game Store, open Microsoft or PlayStation Store, and unlock this character through microtransactions. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
- Go to the game’s Store by pressing the Menu or Pause button.
- Select Microsoft Store or PlayStation Store.
- Open the “Character” tab.
- Select Shang Tsung to unlock him.
Previously, players could get Shang Tsung as a pre-order reward. However, since the offer has ended, the only way to get this Kombatant is by paying real-life money.
Currently, Shang Tsung is not available as a reward in any of the Mortal Kombat 1 modes. So, unlike Havik, whom players could unlock by completing the story mode, Shang is only accessible via the game’s Store.
How to Get Shang Tsung's Announcer Voice
Shang Tsung’s voice can be purchased from the Premium Items section of the Store. Once acquired, it will become available in the Video & Audio settings under the Audio Input tab, changing the default narrator to Alan Lee, Shang’s voice actor.
However, note that Shang Tsung’s announcer voice is a limited-time shop offer. So, players might be able to buy for a limited time.
Is Shang Tsung Worth Buying?
Since Mortal Kombat 1 has a balanced roster, purchasing Shang Tsung won’t give players any combat advantage. However, considering that the majority of players don’t own this character, Shang might be the most unpredictable Kombatant in the first few MK seasons.
Although unlocking Shang Tsung is expensive, players looking to complete their fighter roster would benefit from buying it early. Having him unlocked will also help pro players master his combos before he becomes globally available in future updates.
