The primary Mortal Kombat 1 roster may have been leaked, and it contains several fighters from the franchise’s mid-2000s era. Mortal Kombat 1 will mark a new age for the fighting game franchise, serving as a continuity reboot in which Fire God Liu Kang creates a peaceful new universe for the residents of Earthrealm. This new world is soon threatened by a returning Shang Tsung, requiring Liu Kang and his allies to jump into battle once more.
Both the initial Mortal Kombat 1 announcement and last week’s brutal Summer Game Fest trailer revealed a few of the familiar characters that will enter this battle, including the iconic ninja rivals Scorpion and Sub-Zero, sisters Kitana and Mileena, and Hollywood stuntman-turned-Earthrealm defender Johnny Cage. Mortal Kombat 1's roster will be split into two groups: the primary set of playable characters and a selection of Kameo fighters. These are computer-controlled support characters that can be summoned by a single button press.
A massive new Mortal Kombat 1 leak may have just revealed the game’s full playable cast. Reddit user MarkT_D_W recently shared a wealth of supposed MK1 information on r/Mortalkombatleaks, with such tidbits as Mortal Kombat 1 getting rid of the Krypt from the last three entries. Also included in the leak was the alleged playable roster, which is said to feature 24 characters. 19 of these were listed here, with a mix of previously confirmed Kombatants and newly-revealed names from the franchise’s storied history.

Many of the names included in this leaked list will be readily familiar to fans of Mortal Kombat’s mid-2000s games, which saw the franchise make the jump to 3D graphics on the sixth generation of consoles. Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon recently hinted at MK4 fighters like Reptile and Reiko appearing in Mortal Kombat 1, and sure enough both these fan favorites are featured in the leak. Other big names include the chaos-obsessed Havik from Mortal Kombat: Deception, the vampiric Nitara from Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, and Lin Mei, an Outworld warrior who hasn’t been seen since Mortal Kombat: Armageddon way back in 2006.
Of course, this new Mortal Kombat 1 leak isn’t official, and any information from it should naturally be met with healthy skepticism until it is confirmed by NetherRealm. However, this Mortal Kombat 1 roster does line up with some of Ed Boon’s past social media teases, and if it is legit then the game will contain many familiar faces from Mortal Kombat’s often-forgotten early 3D era. The leaked roster is also incomplete, meaning that NetherRealm could have a few more surprises waiting for Mortal Kombat 1’s launch this fall.
Mortal Kombat 1 will be released on September 19, 2023, for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
