One of the most exciting aspects of the modern Mortal Kombat games is their post-launch DLC. Between story expansions and new playable characters, NetherRealm Studios has found a way to keep fans invested in the series. Unfortunately, with the release of Mortal Kombat 1's most recent guest character — Terminator 2's T-1000 — players are bracing themselves for a drought of official content.
While NetherRealm initially led fans to believe that Mortal Kombat 1 would be supported for years to come, recent leaks have suggested that upcoming DLC for the game has been canceled. This was apparently due to lackluster sales for the game's Khaos Reigns expansion. If true, this would be a devastating blow, as there were several rumored guest characters like the Doom Slayer and Harley Quinn that didn't make it into the first two Kombat Packs. The supposed cancelation has fans justifiably upset, but a well-timed crossover could still provide some levity for the community.
With MultiVersus Gone, It's Time For Mortal Kombat to Fill the Void
MultiVersus is shutting down its online servers in May, but the Mortal Kombat franchise might be able to fill the upcoming void.
The Mortal Kombat Roster Arrives in Fortnite and Rocket League
Fortnite already treated Mortal Kombat fans to a collaboration earlier this season that brought Sub-Zero to the game. Besides having a full set of cosmetics in the current battle pass, Sub-Zero also dropped a new mythic item in Battle Royale that lets players walk on water, perform ice slides, and even pummel enemies with a frozen spinal cord. If the Sub-Zero items weren't cool enough for players, Fortnite is continuing to build upon this collab in meaningful ways.
A New Wave of Mortal Kombat Cosmetics
Last week, Fortnite added three more Mortal Kombat characters to the item shop: Scorpion, Raiden, and Kitana. Alongside these skins and their associated gear, multiple new emotes have been added to the game that let players conjure lightning like Raiden, recreate the Test Your Might mini-game, or perform a family-friendly fatality. For players looking to customize their in-game cars, Sub-Zero and Scorpion-themed cosmetics for the Lamborghini Countach car model are available in the shop and can be used in both Fortnite and Rocket League.
The Fortnite Island Hosts Its Own Mortal Kombat Tournament
These new items are great additions to the game — even if Fortnite is once again removing characters' backblings and selling them as separate items — but Fortnite still isn't done with this crossover. On April 1, Battle Royale will be getting a sizable Mortal Kombat update. The mode will receive a Mortal Kombat-themed questline and new POIs based on iconic Mortal Kombat stages like the Dead Pool, the Living Forest, and the Pit. Each match, players exploring these locations will have the chance to run across a new Scorpion boss. If they manage to defeat him, he will drop an exclusive medallion power-up and the Scorpion's Kombat Kit mythic item. The mythic lets players reel enemies in with Scorpion's iconic spear attack and perform melee combos against them.
This might not be the news that Mortal Kombat fans were hoping for, but new content that gets new players interested in the series is far from a bad thing. The Mortal Kombat items in Fortnite's shop will leave the game on April 21. The current battle pass featuring Sub-Zero will be available until May 2, when it will supposedly be replaced with a new Star Wars-themed pass.
