Mortal Kombat 1 launched back in September to critical acclaim, continuing what has been a great year for fighting games. While Mortal Kombat 1 was received well on launch, some of the balancing in the game is rough around the edges, and its first major patch was controversial. Despite some criticism from more competitive players, Mortal Kombat 1 has been a success, and its first Kombat Pack, which started rolling out this month, has plenty of content to keep fans excited. Mortal Kombat 1's first Kombat Pack is getting a plethora of supervillain guest characters alongside some returning series veterans. One of the most interesting to be included is Quan Chi.

Quan Chi is a long-time veteran of the Mortal Kombat franchise, having first appeared in Mortal Kombat 4. Quan Chi is a necromancer with magic powers, but in combat, he is focused on staying close to the opponent and using punishing 50/50 mix-ups to harass his enemies. The character has undergone several evolutions, though this has more or less been his playstyle through much of the franchise's life. As one of the series most recognizable villains, he has appeared even in games where he is not playable. Quan Ch i was notably strong in MKX.

Although there's quite a bit of overlap between the best and most popular Mortal Kombat 1 characters, there are also one or two big surprises.

Quan Chi Will Likely Deliver Swift Beatdowns in MK1

Quan Chi Mortal Kombat 1

Quan Chi appears in Mortal Kombat 1's story mode, giving players a hint at how he may perform in this new entry. Like in previous games, Quan Chi will likely focus on aggressive rush-down gameplay, carried primarily by his strong mix-ups. Some entries have given him a fireball to control space and zone and it's unclear whether or not he will have one in MK1.

In MKX, Quan Chi could grab characters from a distance through portals, which could be a more fitting way to give him some ranged attacks in this new entry. Mortal Kombat 1's focus on player freedom means that anything could be on the table for Quan Chi.

Modders made Ermac available in Mortal Kombat 1 early by pulling the version players fight in story mode. Similarly, modders were able to get access to a stripped-down version of Quan Chi. This can't be taken as confirmation of the final character's abilities, but the moves available to him seem to indicate that his playstyle has remained largely the same as previous entries. While Mortal Kombat 1 plays a bit slower than MKX, the last game he was playable in, his focus on relentless block strings and 50/50 mixups remain intact.

Quan Chi Is As He Was

Quan Chi - Mortal Kombat Reboot Sequel Characters

In this new reboot, Quan Chi is as he was in previous timelines. He has a fresh coat of paint for this new entry while his sense of fashion and overall aesthetic has stayed the same, making him one of the game's more subtle re-inventions. Mortal Kombat 1's story reveals how Quan Chi's skin became a ghostly white, but presumably, his default skin will be post-whitening.

Mortal Kombat X Could Reveal How Quan Chi Will Play in MK1

Quan Chi was a strong but well-balanced character for the vast majority of MKX's life. Since Mortal Kombat 1 rolled back some of the changes made in MK11, and returned to the more open-ended combat of X, it seems likely that this new Quan Chi will borrow heavily from that iteration of the character. Many are excited for the return of Quan Chi, but Peacemaker is due out first as the next character in this Kombat Pack for Mortal Kombat 1. Both characters are planned for release this Winter.
