Summary
- Monster Hunter Wilds hits 1.3M peak Steam players in 9 hours, second only to CS: GO.
- Despite the success, the game has "mixed" ratings on Steam due to optimization issues.
Monster Hunter Wilds is currently experiencing one of the biggest debuts for a Steam game ever, having raced past one million peak concurrent players within six hours of launch. Being the first entry in a highly popular series in over seven years, Monster Hunter Wilds was among the most anticipated game releases when it arrived on February 28, 2025, on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
Back in 2018, with the launch of Monster Hunter World, Capcom rolled out what would eventually become its best-selling game in history. Alongside a huge commercial success, the action RPG was also the recipient of widespread critical acclaim and a host of major award recognitions. Thanks to this incredible performance, its successor, Monster Hunter Wilds, became an eagerly awaited title as soon as it was announced in December 2023. When the devs conducted the game's open beta, the first of which originally started in October 2024, Steam witnessed a massive number of Monster Hunter enthusiasts join in. Now that the monster-taming title is finally out, that number has gone further up, breaching the one million mark in no time.
Monster Hunter Wilds Reveals How To Transfer Open Beta Character Data to Full Game
Before launch, Capcom reveals how Monster Hunter Wilds players can transfer character creation data from the open beta test to the full game.
At the time of writing, Monster Hunter Wilds has reached a peak concurrent player count of 1,305,812 on Steam in just nine hours, per SteamDB data. In doing so, it has become the second most-played Steam game right now. Moreover, the latest Monster Hunter game has also debuted at number one on the list of Steam's top-selling titles in terms of revenue. In comparison, Monster Hunter World, which hit Valve's platform more than six months after its console launch, only ever reached a peak of 334.6K concurrent players at the height of its popularity.
Monster Hunter Wilds Peak Concurrent Player Count on Steam
- 1,305,812 Steam players
Given that Monster Hunter Wilds is also available on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, platforms that do not offer access to player engagement stats the same way, its aggregate concurrent player count is understandably much higher than the number on Steam. This assumption is consolidated by the fact that Capcom's big release currently ranks fourth among the top-10 games on the PS Store in the US.
While the instant popularity of Monster Hunter Wilds on Steam is nothing short of impressive, it might be tricky to say the same about its reviews on the platform. At the time of writing, it has "Mixed" overall reviews based on feedback from 9,017 players. Out of these, only 47% of the user reviews for the game are positive, seemingly because of certain optimization issues that players who gave it a thumbs-down have mentioned facing. As the Monster Hunter Wilds devs follow the usual industry practice of addressing these issues with timely updates, the game's Steam rating could be expected to improve over time.
