Monster Hunter Wilds may be the third "modern" Monster Hunter game following the release of 2018's Monster Hunter World and 2021's Monster Hunter Rise, but it's almost hard to believe it's the overall 27th game in the franchise. Accordingly, Monster Hunter Wilds carries with it two decades' worth of series identity, including many of the franchise's more iconic large monsters making a return to the series via the Forbidden Lands. Joining these returning fan favorites are a host of brand-new monsters making their series debuts in Monster Hunter Wilds, giving the game one of the more robust and exciting monster rosters yet.
In addition to the inclusion of series mainstays like the Yian Kut-Ku and Rathalos — both of which have appeared in more than a dozen Monster Hunter games — Monster Hunter Wilds brings back several monsters not seen in years. Foes like the simian Congalala, who made their debut in Monster Hunter 2, haven't appeared in a mainline series entry since Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate and the arachnid Nerscylla has been equally absent from the franchise. Unsurprisingly, Monster Hunter Wilds fills the majority of its roster with an abundance of newcomers to the series, many of whom will likely end up making return appearances in future Monster Hunter games.

Every Returning Monster in Monster Hunter Wilds
Of the 29 total large monsters that appear in Monster Hunter Wilds, only 9 of them are returning foes from previous series entries. While some other familiar monsters make an appearance in the latter part of Wilds' campaign and during High Rank hunts, these are Wilds-exclusive Guardian variants that do not appear in other series titles.
- Blangonga — Initially introduced in Monster Hunter 2, the fanged beast Blangonga can be found in Monster Hunter Wilds' Iceshard Cliffs. The Blangonga only appeared in four handheld-exclusive Monster Hunter titles before its return in Monster Hunter Wilds, marking the first time the beast has shown up in the series since 2017's Monster Hunter Generations: Ultimate.
- Congalala — Like the Blangonga, the Congalala is another fanged beast first introduced in Monster Hunter 2. This pink-furred foe is one of the earlier large monster hunts players will participate in Monster Hunter Wilds, first encountering the Congalala as part of the Scarlet Forest biome's quest line.
- Gore Magala — A Demi-Elder Dragon first introduced in Monster Hunter 4, Gore Magala shows up once again in Monster Hunter Wilds as part of High Rank. This challenging foe is one of the enemies players face that can inflict the Frenzy status.
- Gravios — Another Monster Hunter 4 alumni showing up in Monster Hunter Wilds, Gravios is a volcanic wyvern with an affinity for fire-based attacks. It serves as the final 5-Star High Rank hunt.
- Gypceros — The poison-elemental wyvern Gypceros is a Monster Hunter series mainstay, first appearing in the original 2004 Monster Hunter and going on to show up in 10 other series entries including Wilds. Players will initially encounter the Gypceros as part of Monster Hunter Wilds' High Rank quest "Beware the Gypceros", which occurs during the Fallow season in the Windward Plains.
- Nerscylla — First appearing in Monster Hunter 4 as one of the new Temnoceran class monsters, Nerscylla is a poison-elemental Temnoceran that also has the ability to inflict Sleep. These arachnid-like foes return in Monster Hunter Wilds, but their hatchlings make a series debut.
- Rathalos — One of the most iconic monsters in the entire Monster Hunter series, the Rathalos has appeared in every mainline Monster Hunter game since the original. This apex predator of the wyvern class first appears in Monster Hunter Wilds as its new Guardian Rathalos variant before players can challenge a standard Rathalos as part of a 5-Star High Rank hunt.
- Rathian — The female wyvern counterpart to the male Rathalos, Rathians have appeared in every Monster Hunter game since the 2004 original as one of the series' more challenging foes. Players will encounter Monster Hunter Wilds' Rathians as part of a 4-Star High Rank hunt quest, and, like in previous entries, they are weak to Dragon and Thunder elements.
- Yian Kut-Ku — Other than the Rathalos and Rathian, the Yian Kut-Ku is Monster Hunter Wilds' most prolific returning large monster, first appearing in Monster Hunter and going on to routinely show up in most mainline entries since. Monster Hunter Wilds introduces the Yian Kut-Ku as part of a quest that signals the transition into High Rank.

The additions of the Wound system and Focus Attacks to Monster Hunter Wilds are positive changes that shouldn't be walked back.
Every New Monster Introduced in Monster Hunter Wilds
Monster Hunter Wilds introduces an impressive 20 new monsters, a few of which fall into the new Guardian Monster category created as part of Monster Hunter Wilds' story and contributions to the series' lore. The main differentiating factor between normal Monsters and Guardian Monsters is the latter's place as artificially created constructs mimicking the creatures they resemble, which results in them having original movesets and unique rewards exclusive to the Guardian class of monsters.
- Chatacabra — The first large monster players encounter in Monster Hunter Wilds is one of the series' new additions, the toad-like Chatacabra. Players encounter this foe for the first time as part of the game's opening mission.
- Quematrice — The Quematrice is a new brute wyvern introduced in Monster Hunter Wilds and is the second large monster players will encounter. Easily recognized by its large, flame-like tail, the Quematrice can easily afflict players with Fireblight if they're not careful.
- Lala Barina — Following in Monster Hunter Rise's footsteps, Monster Hunter Wilds introduces a new Temnoceran class monster with the Lala Barina. This spider-like foe features a large bloom on its thorax that it can open at will to give it a unique appearance that highlights its sporadic movements.
- Balahara — Players will first encounter the Balahara during Monster Hunter Wilds' opening chase sequence before eventually fighting the new monster later on in the main story. These burrowing, worm-like monsters are Leviathan class foes that can inflict Waterblight.
- Doshaguma — The Doshaguma are the territorial fanged beasts that dwell in the Windward Plains region of the Forbidden Lands. Players will first encounter an aggressive Alpha Doshaguma as part of the main quest before being able to tackle optional fights with standard Doshaguma.
- Uth Duna — The apex predator of the Scarlet Forest and a large, leviathan class monster, the Uth Duna is a challenging foe that players will first encounter in the Chapter 1 quest "A Feast in the Deep".
- Rompopolo — A strange cross between an insect and a more traditional brute wyvern, the Rompopolo is a large and intimidating foe that uses both its proboscis and its tail stinger to inflict poison and ground-based AOE attacks.
- Rey Dau — One of a handful of new Flying Wyvern class monsters introduced in Monster Hunter Wilds, the Rey Dau is the apex predator of the Windward Plains region. Players will first encounter this foe as part of the Chapter 2 quest "The Eye of the Storm".
- Hirabami — Hirabami are airborne Leviathans featuring hoods reminiscent of a cobra. When players first encounter these foes, they will face off against three at once, needing to separate the pack using Dung Pods.
- Ajarakan — Another of the new fanged beast monsters introduced in Monster Hunter Wilds, the Ajarakan are aggressive fire-elemental foes that will regularly show up to attack other monsters in the Oilwell Basin.
- Nu Udra — Initially introduced as the "Black Flame", the Nu Udra is a large foe that is one of two new monsters in the Cephalopod class. Accordingly, this beast resembles a large black octopus, using its tentacles for a variety of devastating attacks with long reach.
- Guardian Doshaguma — The first of the new Guardian class of monster constructs players will face is the Guardian Doshaguma. This foe behaves similarly to a standard Doshaguma but has additional abilities that allow it to draw power from the Dragontorch to power up its attacks.
- Guardian Rathalos — Another Guardian construct that players will encounter in the Ruins of Wyveria is the Guardian version of Rathalos. Like the Guardian Doshaguma, this foe behaves similarly to its standard counterpart but can draw power from the earth for devastating wylk-based attacks.
- Jin Dahaad — The Jin Dahaad is one of the largest monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds and a brand-new Leviathan the game introduces to the series. Players encounter this imposing foe in Iceshard Cliffs as they make their way deeper into the Ruins of Wyveria.
- Guardian Ebony Odogaron — This variant of the Odogaron first introduced in Monster Hunter World is a new foe exclusive to Monster Hunter Wilds. Like the other Guardian class monster constructs in Monster Hunter Wilds, the Ebony Odogaron has several exclusive wylk-based attacks.
- Xu Wu — The second monster in the new Cephalopod class is the Xu Wu, which players will challenge immediately after defeating the Guardian Ebony Odogaron. While smaller than the Nu Udra, Xu Wu uses its size to great effect by being quick and aggressive.
- Guardian Arkveld — Before players encounter the Arkveld proper, they'll first have to face off against its construct created by the people of Wyveria. Guardian Arkveld features exclusive wylk-based abilities thanks to its status as a Guardian monster construct and is weak to the Dragon element.
- Zoh Shia — The initial "final boss" of Monster Hunter Wilds, Zoh Shia is a large Guardian construct with a body composed entirely of crystal. As players destroy these crystals, they will periodically regenerate until dealing enough damage to trigger Zoh Shia's transformation.
- Guardian Fulgur Anjanath — While the standard Anjanath was originally introduced in Monster Hunter World, Monster Hunter Wilds delivers a brand-new Guardian construct variant in the Guardian Fulgur Anjanath. Players will take on this challenging foe as part of a High Rank quest.
- Arkveld — The apex predator of the Forbidden Lands and Monster Hunter Wilds' ultimate foe, Arkveld is a large flying wyvern that was originally thought to be extinct. Players encounter this challenging adversary as part of the game's final High Rank quest.
