Quematrice is a Brute Wyvern in Monster Hunter Wilds that you'll fight early on as part of the main story. It's the second large monster you're going to hunt as you play the game. The monster, though initially encountered in Windward Plains, can also be found later on in the Ruins of Wyveria.

Monster Hunter Wilds Quematrice Attack Patterns

As with most hunts, positioning is key to defeating the Quematrice in Monster Hunter Wilds. Despite being such an early-game encounter, the monster has a decent set of attacks that you'll have to look out for. On top of that, it can also inflict the Fireblight Status Ailment, which causes your health to deplete over time.

If you get afflicted with Fireblight, use Nulberry to get rid of it. You can also dodge quickly or go into water to remove Fireblight.

Quick Pecks

The Quematrice raises its head and performs a series of up to four consecutive pecks. It's easy to dodge sideways to get on the monster's side during this attack and get a few hits in. You can also parry or guard the attack for a Power Clash.

Bite Attack

The monster roars and rushes forward with its head down, trying to bite the Hunter. Dodge sideways to avoid getting hit.

Tail Sweep

The Quematrice has a tail sweep attack that knocks the Hunter back if you get hit. It can be easily avoided by dodging backwards.

Fireblight Tail Sweep

During tail sweep attacks, the Quematrice can also ignite the ground. When using the Fireblight Tail Sweep attack, the monster lowers its head slightly. It's best to back away from it since the burning area will continue to damage you if you stand on it.

Beak Sweep

The Quemetrice sidesteps quickly, attacking with its beak in a wide sweep.

Tail Slam

The Quematrice slams its tail down on the ground. This attack has a heavy knockback, but you can counter it if you time your parry with the Switch Axe.

Fireblight Rush

The Quematrice rushes forward and attacks with a Fireblight tailsweep in front. It can deal a lot of damage, so it's best to dodge to the side to avoid it.

Quematrice Weaknesses

The Quematrice can be an aggressive monster to face early on, but it has a lot of weaknesses that players can exploit. Its two main weak points are the head/neck and its tail. It's better to avoid focusing on the torso region, as it has the lowest damage modifier.

The beast is weak against severing weapons. You can also cut off its tail with enough severing attacks, which will make the fight much easier. Parrying its attacks with a well-timed guard or counter can also stagger the creature and give you an opening to dish out the damage with a Focus Attack.

Elemental Weaknesses:

The Quematrice's biggest elemental weakness is Water.
Poison and Paralysis are effective status effects against the Quematrice.

Best Traps to Use:

Flash Pod: It can disorient the Quematrice, allowing you to get a few hits.
Shock & Pitfall Trap: Both are highly effective at immobilizing Quematrice, giving you openings to land big attacks.

The Vine Trap is an effective environmental trap since it can pin down the Quematrice while you attack its tail.

How to Beat the Quematrice in Monster Hunter Wilds

The Quematrice is fast and evasive, so staying close to its legs is the best strategy. However, you need to be mindful of its tail attacks and fire-infused strikes. Here's how to effectively take it down:

Stay near its legs. The Quematrice's tail is its deadliest weapon, so staying close reduces your chances of getting hit by tail swipes and ignited attacks.
Avoid staying on its tail for too long, as the Tail Sweep attacks can deal a lot of damage.
Break its wounds to topple it. The Quematrice becomes staggered when wounds are broken, limiting its movement and creating opportunities for big attacks.
Use Water-based weapons. The Quematrice is extremely weak against water, so consider using it to your advantage.
If you get affected by Fireblight, either use a Nulberry to nullify it or roll quickly.
Mounting the monster is a great way to create a wound on its tail. Severing it will make the fight a lot easier, as the monster will no longer be able to use its fire-based attacks.
