When a player sets out on a hunt in Monster Hunter Wilds, they will be given access to a plethora of tools that can help them stay alive until they return victorious. This includes the ability to cook and eat an assortment of meals that give their hunter a variety of buffs to health, stamina, and defense. However, these buffs will only last for so long, and once those buffs disappear, players can often find themselves wondering what they're supposed to do to beat their target.

Fortunately, there are other ways to reclaim some of these buffs. While it may not be as comprehensive as eating the meals consumed at camp, cooking food on the field can also be a great way to get some advantage. This is done using the meat harvested from killing the smaller monsters scattered around the map. Placing this meat on the BBQ Grill allows a person to cook it for eating, with several different ways to cook the meat based on the amount of time spent doing it.

This includes the Well-done Steak, which can be a little tricky to get the timing right, as waiting too long can easily result in a piece of Burnt Meat instead. That is why this guide is here to help players learn how to cook Well-Done Steak to perfection.

How To Cook a Well-Done Steak in MH Wilds

When a hunter takes out their BBQ Grill to cook, it begins a mini-game of sorts that players will need to master in order to cook their meat the way they want to. This mini-game is about timing and understanding what is needed to get a certain product afterward.

Before the cooking can be done, however, players will need to get the BBQ Spit item. This is a tool that can be used to cook while out on a hunt. It is given to players early on in the game once they have met Ysai and journeyed to his village for the first time.

After returning from the village and giving Honey to the Provisions Shop, the Palico running the place will give the player a bunch of items, including the BBQ Spit.

To cook a Well-Done Steak, players need to follow these steps:

  1. Take out the portable BBQ Grill and select the option to grill meat. This uses Raw Meat that can be harvested from the smaller monsters running around the game's map. It can be used by going into the Item Pouch with L1/LB on controller or I on keyboard, scrolling to the BBQ Spit option, and then pressing the Interact button to bring it out.
  2. Players will then need to press the interact button at the right time to get the meat cooked properly. This is once the meat has been turned about two times, and when players can see a change in the meat's color to a deep brown.
  3. The hunter will then go into an animation where they cut the meat into chunks. Players need to press the interact button at every beat of the little tune that plays. Doing this properly will see the hunter get 12 chunks of Well-Done Steak in their inventory. But players should be careful: this mini-game is easy to miss, and if players aren't ready to press the button to the rhythm of the song, it will be skipped entirely and give them only six pieces of Well-Done Steak.

Eating a Well-Done Steak will completely recover a player's health and stamina while also giving each bar a bump to increase their capacity to their maximum.

There are a couple of other ways to cook meat in the game as well, and they each have a different effect on the player:

  • Rare Steak: restores health and stamina and also boosts the health bar for a limited time
  • Burnt Meat: can only restore the stamina of the hunter without any healing capabilities
