  • Flygon and Armaldo could serve as models for creating threatening and visually striking monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds, especially if the game goes open-world.

Monster Hunter Wilds looks like a big change for the series, and one of the most consequential generations of Pokemon could provide some ideas. As a Monster Hunter title, Monster Hunter Wilds needs to live up to series standards when it comes to introducing new monsters. Most Pokemon don't have the same immense size as the mighty beasts that players encounter in Monster Hunter games. Even so, there are a lot of traits that can carry over between series.

Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire were landmark titles, introducing such staples as abilities and double battles. Considering the announcement trailer that revealed Monster Hunter Wilds' new mount, the games already look to have something in common. Ruby and Sapphire featured several innovative and impressive designs for the Pokemon of Hoenn, many of whom became iconic species. In fact, a few among their number already had some Monster Hunter-like flair.

Hoenn's Pokemon Could Introduce Some Interesting Ideas For Monster Hunter Wilds

Slaking Could Inspire Monster Hunter's Laziest, Deadliest Monster

Slaking has stats on par with legendary Pokemon, but is balanced by its ability only allowing it to act every other turn. This concept of a lazy but obscenely strong monster could translate well to Monster Hunter. A beast that can deal massive damage and send players flying, but needs plenty of rest between attacks, has the makings of a solid challenge. Monster Hunter's combat mechanics already include stunning and tiring out monsters, so a Slaking-themed beast could take that concept to the extreme.

Monster Hunter Wilds Could See a Muddy Combatant Like Marshtomp

Barroth and Jyuratodus are monsters that fight with mud, and Marshtomp does the same in Pokemon. A fierce, amphibous Water starter, Marshtomp mixes moves like Mud Shot and Muddy Water with physical moves like Take Down and Hammer Arm. This is a formula that could create a brutish monster for the waterways of Monster Hunter Wilds. Not to mention, it would use mud purely for offense rather than armor, adding a twist to the gimmick compared to the usual suspects.

A Roar in Monster Hunter Wilds Could Be Made Deadly By a Monster Like Exploud

Roaring is an ability that almost every monster coming to Monster Hunter Wilds will presumably have. However, Exploud, a Pokemon that is practically a living loudspeaker, could create a monster that fights by roaring. Taking inspiration from moves like Hyper Voice and Boomburst, a similarly loud monster could use its roars to damage players rather than stunning them. If that isn't enough, Exploud's array of biting attacks show that it can be dangerous even without being loud.

Flygon's Unique Gimmick and Impressive Abilities Make it Solid Inspiration For Monster Hunter Wilds

Being a dragonfly-like dragon has always given Flygon a unique appeal, making it perfect for a Monster Hunter makeover. A monster that could generate sandstorms with its wings like Flygon could be a serious threat in a desert like the one seen in Monster Hunter Wilds' announcement trailer. That isn't the only thing that makes Flygon a model to follow, though. A desert-dwelling dragon with insect-like qualities could lead to dazzling designs for the creature.

A Monster Like Armaldo Could Be an Ancient Menace in Monster Hunter Wilds

Fossil Pokemon are almost always interesting, with Armaldo being a particularly notable example. A heavily-armored ancient insect with razor-sharp claws, Armaldo could be quite scary if scaled up to Monster Hunter's usual standards. In terms of both offense and defense, it's equipped with everything it needs to be a serious threat. The first trailer alone gives off the impression that a wild new theme should be expected, especially if Monster Hunter Wilds goes open-world. If Monster Hunter Wilds is looking to make a threatening monster with an ancient motif, Armaldo is a perfect role model.
