In Monster Hunter Wilds, there are dozens of monsters players can fight, but many aren't available until you reach High Rank and beat the campaign. A fire-breathing frilled lizard, Yian Kut-Ku, is one of these endgame monsters.
Monster Hunter Wilds: How to Beat Gravios
Here's a guide showing all the important things you need to know about hunting a Gravios in MH Wilds.
To beat the Yian Kut-Ku, Monster Hunter Wilds players must be agile, watch out for its fireball attacks, and get out of the way of its charge (which also launches fireballs). This guide offers tips on how to beat Yian Kut Ku, Monster Hunter Wilds tips for this boss, and what materials you can expect to get by defeating the Kut-Ku.
MH Wilds Yian Kut-Ku Location
To find the Yian Kut-Ku, travel to the Scarlet Forest and Iceshard Cliffs regions. The Yian Kut-Ku has a high chance to spawn in these regions, and it does not matter what time of day it is or what kind of environmental weather effects are active.
Yian Kut-Ku tend to spawn in packs, so be sure to craft a Dung Pod or pick up some Dung with your slinger on the way to the Yian Kut-Ku spawn location.
Once you have entered the Forest or Cliffs, open up your detailed map and scan for the Yian Kut-Ku icon. If the Yian Kut-Ku is not currently active in the region, head to a Pop-Up Camp or the Base Camp and rest to reset the monsters in the area.
Press in the right analog stick to set a Waypoint on the Yian Kut-Ku location, then mount your Seikret and set it to Auto-Run and it will bring you straight to its location.
How To Beat Yian Kut-Ku
Bird wyverns with impressive beaks and large ears. They tend to be skittish but will sometimes initiate attacks on a perceived threat.
Yian Kut-Ku arrive in large groups during the season of Plenty in the Scarlet Forest. The absence of eggs or young suggests that the purpose of this is not to breed, but rather to seek out mates and nourishment.
Yian Kut-Ku Weaknesses & Weak Spots
The Yian Kut-Ku is weak to all slashing, blunt, and ranged weapons, as well as several different elemental damage types. The Yian Kut-Ku's Head, Wings, Legs, and Tail can be broken, while its Mouth is its major weak point. It's hard to hit the Yian Kut-Ku's head, though, because it moves so much.
Monster Hunter Wilds: Weapon Tier List
Make sure you're using the best weapon for your Monster Hunter Wilds hunts.
Despite the fact that it wields Fire attacks itself, the Yian Kut-Ku is not immune to Fire damage. In fact, almost all elemental damage types and status effects work against the Yian Kut-Ku. The only exception is Dragon damage, which will only deal damage to its Neck area.

Generally, the best attacks to use to beat a Yian Kut-Ku are Thunder and Ice attacks, as these will do extra damage on most parts of the monster's body. Because it is not resistant to any MH Wilds status effects, feel free to use weapons that can inflict Sleep, Paralysis, and other movement-impairing effects to make this hunt easier.
Notably, the Yian Kut-Ku is weak to the Sonic Bomb slinger ammo item because it has highly sensitive hearing. Use these to create more windows of opportunity and interrupt the monster's more heavy-hitting attacks.
Yian Kut-Ku Attacks To Watch Out For
In Monster Hunter Wilds, Yian Kut-Ku are very fast and use attacks that can be difficult to anticipate. In addition to close-range pecks, swipes, and tail sweeps (which will usually happen twice in a row), the Yian Kut-Ku can use various fire attacks.
Its fireball attacks can be targeted in close and medium range, or fired off rapidly to the sides as the monster charges forward. If you have a hard time dodging these attacks, equip some Fire Resistance gear to mitigate this part of its moveset. Bring some Nulberries, which will counter the Fireblight inflicted by this monster's Fire attacks.
Typically, you can avoid most attacks (like its peck and tail swipe) by evading. Unless it leaps back to fire off a fireball, or is actively charging and firing off fireballs to the left and right, it's best to dodge underneath or to the side of the monster for the majority of its moves.
Aside from a variety of melee attacks that you can dodge by evading to the side or underneath the boss, the only attack players should really look out for is its flailing fireball charge. Right before it charges, it will t ypically leap backward away from its target. As soon as you see it leap backward, start sprinting to the side.
Monster Hunter Wilds: How to Beat Zoh Shia
One of the last monsters you will have to hunt in Monster Hunter Wild's story is a massive beast called the Zoh Shia, and this guy's not an easy fight
The Yian Kut-Ku will charge forth and fire off fireballs to the sides as it charges forward. Sometimes, it will perform this attack back to back, but if it flails and falls over at the end of its charge you're good to re-engage.
Yian Kut-Ku Strategies
- Because the Yian Kut-Ku is susceptible to status effects, movement-locking effects like Stun, Paralysis, and Exhaust can be incredibly useful against this fast-moving monster
- When the Yian Kut-Ku does its tail whip, it will rotate halfway around, then rotate again. Roll under the monster when it swipes its tail, as this attack is difficult to avoid just by dodging to the side.
- Most of the Yian Kut-Ku's melee attacks can be countered with an Offset Attack. However, its fireball attacks cannot be parried, so if you see it charging up a fireball, get out of the way.
- Ranged players will have an easier time against the Yian Kut-Ku if they make liberal use of traps and other movement-impairing effects. The monster is particularly weak to ranged damage.
- Bring both Flash Pods and Sonic Bombs to the Yian Kut-Ku fight. Monster Hunter Wilds players can use these to interrupt its fireball charge.
- Because Yian Kut-Ku tend to spawn around other Yian Kut-Ku, remember to bring (or acquire) some Dung Pods to shoo off other monsters.
MH Wilds Yian Kut-Ku Drops & Other Rewards
By hunting a Yian Kut-Ku, Monster Hunter Wilds players have a chance to get specific Yian Kut-Ku monster materials. Monster Hunter Wilds: How To Get & Use Monster Hardbone
To get Monster Hardbone, Monster Hunter Wilds players must kill specific High Rank/high difficulty monsters, or complete specific quests.
Like all monster materials, all Yian Kut-Ku materials are not guaranteed to drop from skinning or Target Rewards at the end of a quest (which includes captured monster materials). Instead, you have a chance to get these materials, some of which become more likely to drop depending on which parts you break:
