Monster Hunter Stories is a spin-off of the popular Monster Hunter franchise, and it was the first real RPG of the entire franchise. Thankfully, it has been remastered, allowing a whole host of new players to start playing the amazing game for the first time. The game follows a Monster Rider (rather than Monster Hunter), as they work alongside monsters, which they call Monsties.
One major aspect of the game is finding and recruiting Monsties. To do this, players will need to find & hatch eggs or build new eggs by combining Egg Fragments that can be found throughout the game. However, in order to get monster eggs, players will need to have monsters retreat, which is where Paintballs come in. Here's how to unlock & use those Paintballs.
Monster Hunter Stories: How to Create the Best Team
Players can create some amazing teams in MHST. Here are some tips on how to do just that.
How To Unlock & Get Paintballs In Monster Hunter Stories
During the game, players will reach the Darj Snowfields and Darj Rock Baths area. In this area, they will meet a mysterious rider, new monsters, and learn new things about the game. One thing that will happen as they are finishing up this region is that they will unlock the paintball recipe, which allows them to craft Paintballs.
This happens while following the main questline after clearing the Darj Rock Baths (The Darj Rock Baths quest) and being asked by the Riddlemaster to find a specific monster (A Monstrous Riddle). Avinia will give the recipe to the player and tell them to use it to help make monsters retreat.
After unlocking Paintballs, players can obtain them in a couple different ways.
- Purchase them from stores for 200 Zenny
- Craft them by using Sap Plants and Paintberries
Monster Hunter Stories: All Monster Attack Patterns
The Monsters in MHST can be difficult to battle. Here's a breakdown of how they fight.
How Paintballs Work In MHST
Paintballs are used to help Monster Riders track monsters back to their dens. In order to use them, players will need to start a battle with a monster and then select the Paintball to use, which can be found in the items section of the battle menu. Once they are used, players will need to defeat the monster within 3 turns for the Paintball to work. This means that the item is best used on enemies that have a low amount of health.
Despite popular belief, Paintballs do not ensure that a monster will retreat. Instead, it just increases the chances. Players may need to do multiple things on top of using the Paintball if they want to get a monster to retreat.
