Great Stoutbones are one of the key crafting ingredients for many of the weapons and armor in Monster Hunter Wilds. Bone weapons are particularly good for players who know how to take full advantage of the game's combat, making them perfect for aggressive playstyles.

As players progress through the main story of MH Wilds, they'll eventually find themselves in need of higher-quality materials. Thankfully, Great Stoutbones aren't that hard to get. Here's where you can find some for your own crafting projects.

Monster Hunter Wilds As Gatekeeper Great Stoutbone

Great Stoutbones are a type of material found in High Rank, and as of writing, they are mainly obtained as rewards by completing the following quests:

  • As Gatekeeper (Dual Ajarakan hunt)
  • What We Protect (Blangonga)
  • Blangonga Excursion (Blangonga)
  • Doshaguma Hunt (Doshaguma)
  • Annihilating Anguish (Ajarakan)
  • Any Investigation/Field Survey involving these monsters

The Blangonga is arguably the easiest of the three monsters here. They commonly appear in the Iceshard Cliffs region alongside smaller Blangos. If you're looking for only Great Stoutbones, then farming Blangongas should be the easiest and fastest way to do so — their moveset is much simpler compared to Ajarakan's, and while they're faster than Doshagumas, Blangongas hit for far less damage.

Additionally, if you ever find a Frenzied version of any of these three monsters, we recommend going for them first. Frenzied monsters are significantly more aggressive than their normal counterparts, but they also have less total health, making them easier to take down.

You can replay Frenzied or Tempered monster investigations by visiting the Field Survey History tab in the Quest Board. Otherwise, replay Optional Quests that feature such monsters instead.

What Are Great Stoutbones For?

As mentioned, Great Stoutbones are commonly used for crafting Tier 4 versions of the Bone Tree weapons as well as the armor sets of the three monsters listed above. Such weapons include:

Bone weapons in general have higher raw Attack values compared to ones made of metal. However, they also have less sharpness in general. Not only will players have to sharpen their weapon more often, but they also won't be able to reach or stay in white or purple sharpness levels for long.

Additionally, many Bone-based weapons have negative Affinity, which can lead to players dealing less damage on hits. Critical hits are based on your Affinity, so if you want Bone weapons to crit, you'll need equipment skills like Critical Eye and Weakness Exploit to help you out.
