A Garry's Mod user created what is possibly the biggest map ever seen in a video game. Garry's Mod gives its players powerful modding tools to construct unique creations, and this player took that aspect to a new height.
Garry's Mod was fully released back in 2006 and immediately became a hit. Over the years, many users played it for its fan-made game modes, like Prop Hunt or Trouble in Terrorist Town, while others used the game's physics-based sandbox to craft impressive, original worlds. These creations ranged from modes like the previously mentioned minigames to expansive role-playing worlds like DarkRP. Garry's Mod's dedicated community has allowed it to remain somewhat popular to this day, sporting a 38,000-player peak on Steam this month. Facepunch is even working on a spiritual successor to Garry's Mod known as s&box. Today, its players continue to churn out impressive maps, and this one might take the cake.
Mod for Popular Steam Game Used to Spread Malware
A mod for a fairly popular Steam game gets hijacked by hackers and used to spread malware to its players, stealing their passwords.
Garry's Mod user Alexandrovich created the 1:1 Multiverse (2048 Universes) map, which is 2,048 times larger than the known size of the universe. Currently, players who load into the map can fly through the universe as they pass countless galaxies. Users can also zoom in on each galaxy to see some basic details like a spiral shape or various colors. Alexandrovich explained that solar systems will be added in the map's next update, which will presumably include some planets for players to zoom in on. The map's creator further explained that users will need 12 GB of RAM to run the map, with a recommendation of 32 GB of RAM. Also, users will need to launch the 64-bit version of Garry's Mod and have 522 MB of free storage.
The map is so expansive that some players reported that their PCs struggled to run Alexandrovich's creation. The 1:1 Multiverse map's size undoubtedly beats out the biggest open-world games ever created. However, to be fair to the winner of that list, No Man's Sky, Alexandrovich's map of course doesn't feature the same kind of interactivity.
Although the Garry's Mod map isn't incredibly immersive in certain ways, its next update suggests that aspect will be improved on in the future. It's easy to point out the 1:1 Multiverse map's shortcomings compared to more traditional creations, but Alexandrovich's map is incredibly unique and creative. Other users have crafted plenty of other interesting creations, like when one user managed to import Mario's character into Garry's Mod.

Garry's Mod is a physics sandbox. There aren't any predefined aims or goals. We give you the tools and leave you to play.
You spawn objects and weld them together to create your own contraptions - whether that's a car, a rocket, a catapult or something that doesn't have a name yet - that's up to you. You can do it offline, or join the thousands of players who play online each day.
If you're not too great at construction - don't worry! You can place a variety of characters in silly positions. But if you want to do more, we have the means.
The Garry's Mod community is a tremendous source of content and has added hundreds of unique modes to the game. In Trouble In Terrorist Town, you can be a detective solving an online murder as criminals attempt to cover up their homicides. Be a ball, a plant, a chair, or anything else in Prop Hunt's elaborate, shape-shifting game of Hide & Seek. Elevator: Source is gaming's first elevator thrill ride, delivering players to airlocks and kitten dance parties.
We have one of the most vibrant Steam Community Workshops, with over 300'000 models, maps, and contraptions to download. It has everything from new tools to improve your builds, to guns that fire rainbow-tinged nuclear blasts from space. Take as much or as little as you need: it’s all free.
Please note: Some multiplayer servers and game-modes might require you to own other games - such as Counter-Strike: Source and Team Fortress 2.
