After five years in development, modders have completed a project that brings the gameplay of Portal to Minecraft. The project lets Minecraft: Java Edition players enjoy the puzzle mechanics and gameplay of Portal, or make levels of their own. Best of all, it's playable with vanilla Minecraft, so players don't have to install secondary mods to check it out.

Portal and Minecraft entered the scene around the same time, launching in 2007 and 2009, respectively. Both games were wildly popular upon release, with Minecraft receiving numerous updates, and Portal being popular enough that Valve produced a sequel, with Portal 2 even including co-op mode. Since then, though, Portal as a franchise has largely faded into the background without any new major releases in years, while Minecraft is still going strong. Those who miss Portal may want to check out this new experience within Minecraft to satisfy that craving.

Modders Make Portal Inside Vanilla Minecraft

Now, a team of modders has released Portal: Java Edition to the public, which lets players enjoy everything that Valve's puzzle platforming game Portal 2 had to offer within Minecraft. Impressively, Portal: Java Edition is able to work with completely vanilla Minecraft, utilizing the data packs and resource packs already available for the game. A demo video gives a look at what players can expect, showing off all the classic elements that fans of Portal will recognize, like the portals themselves, light bridges, excursion funnels, lasers, emancipation grills, mobility gels, aerial faith plates, and more. The project is so similar in appearance to the Portal games that some commenting on it have expressed how surprised they were that the footage isn't from the actual Valve games.

Portal: Java Edition includes 50 levels and eight map packs, which should provide plenty of content and puzzles for players to explore and solve. However, for those who are more interested in what's possible with Portal technology, Portal: Java Edition impressively includes a map editor, as well. A brief demonstration shows how players can build their own Portal levels to play, which should provide a lot of replayability and opportunities for creativity.

Minecraft lets players create anything they set their minds to, and that includes remaking other games like this. Previously, Minecraft fans have impressed the community by remaking games like Tetris, Super Mario Bros., and Pac-Man in Minecraft. Some of these also haven't needed mods, like one fan's recreation of The Legend of Zelda in Minecraft.
