The developer behind Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind has confirmed that players can unlock Tommy Oliver, the iconic Green Ranger. Announced during Summer Game Fest 2024, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind will take players back to the original 1993 incarnation of the Power Rangers franchise for a side-scrolling beat-em-up that combines retro-style gameplay and 5-player co-op with numerous nods to the classic series.
One fan-favorite element of the old show was noticeably absent from what has been shown of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Revenge so far, and that is the original sixth Ranger, Tommy Oliver. Played by the late Jason David Frank, Tommy was introduced midway through the first season of MMPR as the Green Ranger, helping to propel the already massive series to new heights thanks to his impressive karate skills and fearsome Dragonzord battle mech. Tommy would appear in several follow-up seasons before Jason David Frank’s passing in late 2022, taking on new suits and roles in the never-ending battle against evil.

In honor of National Power Rangers Day, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind developer Digital Eclipse has at last confirmed that Tommy Oliver will be playable in his original Green Ranger form in a new press release. By completing the Rita's Rewind story campaign once, fans will be able to replay levels as the Green Ranger, and Tommy’s introductory story arc has been incorporated into the game’s plot. For those who don’t know, Tommy debuted in the five-episode “Green With Evil” storyline, where he was initially brainwashed by the evil Rita Repulsa as a minion who nearly destroyed the Rangers before joining the side of good.

This also means that the evil Green Ranger will likely be a boss fight in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind, which sees the resurrected Robo-Rita from last year’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once and Always special travel back in time to assist her past self in conquering Angel Grove. It isn’t clear if Tommy’s Dragonzord will appear in Rita’s Rewind, but the game does feature Megazord battles in the form of 3D rail-shooter sequences.
Many fans had already figured that Tommy would be playable in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind due to both his status as one of the most popular characters in the Power Rangers franchise and the game’s focus on the classic 1993 incarnation of the team that he originally joined. Nonetheless, players now have official confirmation that they can unlock the legendary Green Ranger in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind, which is set to launch sometime later this year.

In Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind, the team faces off against a robotic reincarnation of the Power Rangers' long-time nemesis. Robo Rita has conjured a portal to send herself back in time so she can finally vanquish the Power Rangers by forming an alliance with her younger self. Working together, Robo Rita and Rita Repulsa rewind, rewrite, and remix the past in an attempt to stop the very formation of the Power Rangers, altering the course of history.
