For those who didn't grow up with the series, the Power Rangers timelines can be rather tricky to understand. But thankfully, the upcoming Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind seems to be keeping things simple.

Announced at Summer Game Fest, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind is a throwback to the 90s era of gaming, delivering a part beat 'em up, part shoot 'em up, and part combat racer all rolled into one stylish, pixelated package. Based on its announcement trailer, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind looks like a bright, energetic, fun time, and with its story focusing on just the original group of titular Rangers, it should remain pretty accessible to newcomers. That said, it wouldn't hurt to know a few things about the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers before diving into Rita's Rewind.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Explained

The Real-World History Behind The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

In the 1980s, the media businessman Haim Saban had an idea to take footage from a popular Japanese kids' show and work it around an original story and set of characters. Saban's initial pilots didn't gain much traction, but eventually, in 1992, his revised pilot ended up being picked up by Fox Kids. This revised pilot used footage from the popular Super Sentai series, which was dubbed over by American voice actors. Additional scenes of American actors out of the Super Sentai suits were also used to forge an original story. And thus Power Rangers was born.

The very first Power Rangers series was titled Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, which followed a similar approach to Saban's original pilot, using footage from Super Sentai's Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger series. The first season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers aired in 1993 and ran until 1994, consisting of an impressive 60 episodes in total. Obviously, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers became a colossal hit, receiving two more seasons that ran until 1995, selling countless toys and other pieces of merchandise, and spawning an array of future Power Rangers series.

While most Power Rangers series take place in the same universe, the vast majority follow their own separate storylines with their own cast of characters and villains.

The In-Universe Lore Behind The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

For a kids' show, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers gets pretty convoluted quite fast. The show opens up with a team of astronauts cracking open a mysterious alien container that ends up releasing the evil sorceress Rita Repulsa and her army of colorful alien minions. As Rita Repulsa heads towards Earth, the ancient wizard Zordon awakens and calls upon five Californian teenagers to become a super-powered team of martial artists known as the Power Rangers. This first line-up of Power Rangers includes Kimberly Hart, Zack Taylor, Jason Lee Scott, Billy Cranston, and Trini Kwan, who become the Pink, Black, Red, Blue, and Yellow Rangers respectively.

Along with superhuman strength and agility, the Power Rangers are given an arsenal of high-tech, ancient weaponry, and a full suite of powerful vehicles known as Zords. Each of these Zords is based on a different dinosaur or other prehistoric creature, such as a Triceratops, sabertooth tiger, and mastodon. These Zords can combine to create a Megazord, a giant, walking robotic sentinel.
