Yesterday, Head of Xbox Phil Spencer revealed on Twitter that the recently announced Middle-earth: Shadow of War will be an Xbox Play Anywhere title. If this news wasn't exciting enough for Xbox fans, Spencer also confirmed Middle-earth: Shadow of War as a Project Scorpio game, making it the first title officially announced for the upcoming system.

Taking it a step further, Phil Spencer's tweet could even be evidence that Project Scorpio will have exclusive games not playable on Xbox One or PC, hence the need to distinguish Middle-earth: Shadow of War as an Xbox Play Anywhere title that can be played on all platforms in Microsoft's gaming ecosystem. After all, Spencer didn't single out Xbox One S as a console the game is coming to when it releases this August, possibly because it is simply a redesigned, slightly more powerful Xbox One, whereas Project Scorpio could be something greater.

Of course, this is just speculation at this time, and we likely won't have solid answers on what Project Scorpio is one way or another until Microsoft's E3 2017 press conference in June. Meanwhile, we may be able to garner more clues as to what the console has in store based on the announcement that Middle-earth: Shadow of War is in development for the system.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War's regular and special editions are releasing on August 22nd, which could mean that Project Scorpio will be available by then. In the past, Microsoft has pegged the console for a vague holiday 2017 release window, but perhaps an earlier release date is one of the E3 surprises that Microsoft has in store for fans this year.

Regardless of what system players play Talion's latest adventure on, the game should provide roughly the same experience across the board. Even if the Project Scorpio version of Middle-earth: Shadow of War has graphical enhancements or other bells and whistles, there will likely be parity with the enhanced Nemesis system and core open world action-adventure gameplay fans can expect from the new game.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War will be available on August 22nd for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Project Scorpio.
