Microsoft Rewards may be losing one of its nicest perks in an upcoming update to the service, with fans losing the ability to use points to subscribe to Game Pass. Microsoft's rewards program gives players an incentive for spending money and playing on Xbox, allowing fans to claim everything from digital gift cards to premium memberships. Xbox gamers can pick up some particularly nice incentives through the service, with gift cards and Game Pass subscriptions available through the service. Now, Microsoft Rewards may be making one of its most popular perks a bit harder to pick up.
Xbox Game Pass has stood as one of the pinnacles of game subscription services since it first launched in late 2017. Xbox has helped to pioneer the modern model for game subscription services with Game Pass, later introducing new tiers like "Game Pass Ultimate" and a PC version of Game Pass. The service's overwhelming success has even led other developers and studios to attempt to replicate Microsoft's success, with services like Ubisoft+ and Nintendo Switch Online following in its footsteps. Fans of Microsoft Rewards may now find getting Game Pass subscriptions through the service a bit more difficult.
Xbox Gamers Might Want to Hang On to Their Microsoft Rewards Points Until October
Individuals sitting on a sizeable hoard of Microsoft Rewards Points should think twice before spending them during the month of September.
As reported by PureXbox, Microsoft announced a major change to Game Pass subscriptions through Microsoft Rewards coming in October. The update reveals that players will no longer be able to directly redeem their Microsoft Rewards points through the service to pick up a new Game Pass subscription. Players will still technically be able to put rewards points towards a subscription, though it will involve a more roundabout method with using the rewards points to claim an Xbox gift card through the service. Microsoft did not provide a reason for the change to Microsoft Rewards.
Microsoft Rewards Removing Game Pass Subscriptions
While the change will not completely prohibit players from putting reward points towards subscriptions, the removal of Game Pass subscriptions will make the process more difficult. Microsoft Rewards currently offers both 1-month and 3-month subscriptions to Game Pass Core through the service, taking 9,500 points for a one-month subscription and 24,000 for three months. The change would slightly raise the reward points price on Game Pass subscriptions, with two $5 gift cards costing a total of 10,000 rewards points.
Microsoft's new Rewards changes come as the rewards program was one of the major focuses of the September update coming to Xbox. Microsoft's Rewards Hub is getting a major visual overhaul with the monthly update, said to be more optimized for all sizes of screens including mobile devices. The monthly update will also bring Microsoft's "Gaming CoPilot" AI assistant to the Xbox Game Bar, alongside the introduction of a mobile client for the service. The removal of Game Pass subscriptions from Microsoft Rewards will likely be a bittersweet change for many fans.
