In more ways than one, Metro Exodus is a departure from series norms. The game removes protagonist Artyom from the claustrophobic tunnels that give the series its namesake, and instead lets him explore a series of semi-open world hubs, largely above ground. However, while Metro Exodus does some things different, it also retains some elements of the previous games, like having multiple endings, for instance.
