Metro developer 4A Games Ukraine has announced a rebranding and revealed its next project, a futuristic first-person shooter called La Quimera. The newly unveiled FPS will be the studio's first non-Metro game for non-VR systems.
4A Games currently operates two studios, located in Ukraine and Malta. In September 2024, its parent company, Embracer Group, revealed that the Metro developer was working on "two AAA titles."
Metro: Every Game In The Series, Ranked
The Metro game series doesn't have many weak links, but a few games stand out above the rest.
One of these projects has now been announced in the form of La Quimera, a first-person shooter in a futuristic setting. The sci-fi FPS was revealed with a visually striking trailer that's mostly composed of what appears to be gameplay footage. The two-minute video was shared alongside an announcement that 4A Games Ukraine has rebranded and now goes by Reburn.
La Quimera's Story Was Penned by the Director of Drive
La Quimera takes place in a fictional Latin American megalopolis situated in a jungle. Players will take control of desperate soldiers of a currently unspecified private military company warring with other PMCs in the area. The game's story and lore were co-authored by Danish film director and screenwriter Nicolas Winding Refn, best known for his modern neo-noir film Drive, starring Ryan Gosling. E.J.A. Warren is credited as the other lead writer.
La Quimera Will Feature Optional Co-Op
While La Quimera will be playable solo, it will also support co-op for two or three players. Reburn expects that Metro fans will feel right at home with the game's combination of intense gunplay and emotional storytelling woven into an original setting that marries sci-fi with Latin American folklore. In a prepared statement, Reburn CEO Dmytro Lymar said that La Chimera "draws upon our success crafting narrative-driven shooter games for the Metro series." No release date or even launch window has yet been attached to the project. No console version has been announced, with La Quimera currently only planned to be released on PC via Steam.
It's possible that La Chimera won't be ready to hit the market until 2026 at the earliest. Meanwhile, 4A Games has recently confirmed that it's also working on a new mainline entry in the Metro series, though that project’s release timeline could be even further out. La Chimera, which is Spanish for "the chimera," will mark 4A Games' first-ever original IP for non-VR platforms. The company's only other non-Metro game to date was Arktika.1, a critically acclaimed first-person shooter that debuted in October 2017 as an Oculus Rift exclusive.
