The latest annual online consumer survey released by Atlus indicates that the developer could be considering a sequel for Metaphor: ReFantazio. Released in late 2024, Metaphor: ReFantazio is considered by many to be one of the best JRPGs to hit the shelves in recent years, and fans are eager to receive word on whether a sequel could be a possibility.
Metaphor: ReFantazio received glowing reviews from critics, becoming one of the highest-rated games of 2024, with an average critic score of 93 on OpenCritic. Unlike the Shin Megami Tensei and Persona series, however, Metaphor: ReFantazio marked the beginning of an entirely new franchise, so gamers have no clue whether they will ever see a sequel.

Atlus Could Be Considering a Sequel to Metaphor: ReFantazio
Now, Atlus has released a new online consumer survey, spotted by Persona Central. Most questions are focused on which games the fanbase either plays or intends to purchase, but Question 49 is fairly interesting, asking if fans would be interested in a “new game or sequel” for a few series. While the question asks about some more classic series, such as Etrian Odyssey, Persona, and Shin Megami Tensei, it also gauges interest in Metaphor: ReFantazio.
While this is no confirmation that Metaphor: ReFantazio 2 is in development, this is at least a hint that the title was successful enough to warrant consideration. Unfortunately, Metaphor: ReFantazio’s sales dropped off very quickly after selling one million copies in a day, and the title currently stand at 2 million units sold. Due to this heavily front-loaded release, it’s still unclear how interested Atlus would be in developing a sequel.
Last month, a new rumor indicated that Metaphor: ReFantazio could be released for the Nintendo Switch 2. By being on the new platform, it’s possible that the title could reach an even wider audience, improving its chances of ever getting a sequel or another story set in the same universe.
In any case, a possible sequel to Metaphor: ReFantazio would take years to be released. Back in 2024, game director Katsure Hashino said that Atlus did not have any official plans for a sequel. Because of this, gamers should not expect it anytime soon, as game development often takes at least three or more years. In 2026, it’s expected that gamers will finally see the release of Persona 4 Revival. Earlier this year, one financial report indicated that Persona 4 Revival will be out after April 2026, which makes it the most likely next Atlus RPG.
