While Metaphor: ReFantazio may look like a regular roleplaying adventure, the way its combat system is set up actually sees plenty of tactical nuances that players must master in order to succeed. You can try brute forcing your way through, but it will only make the journey even harder than it needs to be.
That is because there are so many different elements at play, and the sooner you figure them out, the easier it will be to defeat some of the harder bosses found in the game. The first true challenge that lies in the way is that of Homo Avades, and if you are having trouble defeating this human threat, then this guide is for you.
Should You Fight the Fire Dragon Mauna in Metaphor: ReFantazio?
Fire Dragon Mauna is an optional boss in Metaphor: ReFantazio. Players keen on fighting rather than sneaking away should check out this guide.
How To Beat Homo Avades In Metaphor: ReFantazio
This battle comes after players defeat Zorba the necromancer in Metaphor: ReFantazio. The game is kind enough to help your party recover all of their HP and MP, and that is because you will need everything in your power to bring down this next foe.
Aside from its grotesque look and gigantic size, this boss hits fast and hard, and it can easily spell the end for the party if you are not careful. The best way forward is to have two damage dealers for your Archetypes, and be supported by a Healer or Seeker. That leaves the protagonist taking on the support role, while Strohl and Hulkenberg will have to handle the attack.
Combat Strategy
This battle will see several targets reveal themselves to players as it progresses, so it is crucial to remember how they interact with each other. First off, the shell can be destroyed to knock the enemy down, exposing the heart. Initially only reachable by range attacks, attacking the heart is how you can ultimately defeat the Homo Avades.
Focusing on the shell is your first priority, and if you can do it without exhausting all of your Turn Icons, you can get more attacks in on the heart. If you go with the Healer, the weapon attack will exploit the shell's witness and give you an extra turn, otherwise, consider using your Synthesis skills to increase your damage. Destroying the shell will cause the Homo Avades to be stunned for one turn, but once it recovers, a small army of Assailants will appear within the shell.
At this stage, you can either try to defeat the Assailants before your turn ends or try to tank the damage. We recommend going with the former option to keep your party fighting fit, but if that's not possible, prepare to heal the party. Following this, the Homo Avades will regenerate its shell, forcing the process to repeat. It also has new tricks up its sleeves, adding both its left and right hands into the mix. Destroying both will prevent shell regeneration, so exploit their weakness to Fire using spells if you have the spare MP.
This will permanently weaken the shell and require less damage to break, so keep up the pressure and attack the heart as much as you can. It won't be long before it collapses, and you live to fight another day.
