The fantasy RPG Metaphor: ReFantazio sold one million copies on its first day. Critical reception for the new IP has been overwhelmingly positive leading up to its launch, and Metaphor: ReFantazio is now celebrating the studio's most successful launch to date.
First revealed at the June 2023 Xbox Games Showcase, Metaphor: ReFantazio is a JRPG developed by Studio Zero, a development division within Atlus headed by Persona 5 director Katsura Hashino. Undoubtedly, Metaphor: Refantazio is similar to Persona in its gameplay, featuring social links, time management mechanics, social stats, and fast-paced turn-based combat. However, as Persona titles take place in a modern Japanese school setting, Metaphor makes the switch to high fantasy, a choice many have applauded since the game's reveal. The game's immense popularity can now be seen in raw numbers, as Metaphor: Refantazio has already reached an incredible milestone on its launch day.
Metaphor: ReFantazio - 7 Unique Combat Mechanics
Metaphor: ReFantazio brings a lot of gameplay mechanics from other Atlus games, but also has a lot of things that make it unique.
According to Sega, Metaphor: ReFantazio sold one million copies globally on its first day when accounting for both physical and digital sales. This is particularly impressive when considering that the wildly popular title Persona 5 took an entire month to sell 500,000 copies in Japan and 1.5 million copies globally. The sales of the game were likely bolstered by the Metaphor: ReFantazio demo, which was released in late September and included around five hours of gameplay. Giving players a chance to go hands-on with the title and learn more about the game's characters and world clearly had an impact.
Metaphor: Refantazio Sells One Million Copies on Its First Day
Unlike the more contemporary Persona games , Metaphor: ReFantazio takes place in a medieval fantasy realm dubbed the United Kingdom of Euchronia, which is struggling after the assassination of its King. Players control a young orphan boy from the Elda tribe, a race of magic-wielders who are often looked down on for their use of forbidden powers. As the game progresses, players must hone both their skills in battle and their social stats, including their tolerance, courage, wisdom, and eloquence. As the protagonist grows more powerful and respectable, they have more opportunities to make friends and gain allies with the aim of taking the throne.
Like games in the Persona franchise, Metaphor: ReFantazio will be a very lengthy title, taking around 100 hours to complete. While some in the community are frustrated by the amount of time Atlus JRPGs take to complete, it hasn't stopped at least one million people from picking up the new fantasy title. As players await Persona 6 news, Metaphor: ReFantazio is sure to tide Atlus fans over for the foreseeable future. The game was released for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on October 11, 2024, to commemorate Atlus' 35th anniversary.
